Wine-tasting: it's junk science
Experiments have shown that people can't tell plonk from grand cru. Now one US winemaker claims that even experts can't judge wine accurately.
An Examination of Judge Reliability at a major U.S. Wine Competition
Wine judge performance at a major wine competition has been analyzed from 2005 to 2008 using replicate samples. Each panel of four expert judges received a flight of 30 wines imbedded with triplicate samples poured from the same bottle. Between 65 and 70 judges were tested each year. About 10 percent of the judges were able to replicate their score within a single medal group. Another 10 percent, on occasion, scored the same wine Bronze to Gold. Judges tend to be more consistent in what they don't like than what they do. An analysis of variance covering every panel over the study period indicates only about half of the panels presented awards based solely on wine quality.
Executive summary: French, American, red, white, expensive, cheap... it's all so subjective... the look of the bottle and the label have a huge impact!... that it's a wonder anyone pays any attention at all to what anyone else has to say about a particular wine.
Never knew that wine tasting was 'Science'. I always thought it was just an excuse to get drunk.
I lived in Italy for three years. There is definitely a science to wine and wine tasting. I've been to wineries there where the owners get very technical about how two red wines made from the same grape can taste totally different.
well anyone that can't tell a white from a red wine, isn't much of a wine drinker!!!!
I agree. In fact, to become a master sommelier, you need to take blind tests and tell not only what the grape is, but what region the wine is from, what quality it is, its age, and its vintage. You can't fake your way through the exam.
Also, some people are particularly sensitive to cork taint. My ex would dang near turn green if he smelled corked wine, and he could detect TCA at arm's length.
I can tell the difference between what I like and do not like.
I can tell the difference between white and red, but maybe just out of what I always drink.
