Am I the only person who prefers Original Bombay Gin to Sapphire? For me, original Bombay makes the perfect, balanced G&T. In some stores now I find that the only Bombay they stock is Sapphire. I can't help but think that the blue bottle is the primary factor in why it has usurped the original.

Gin in the one liquor that I will not drink...the mere smell of it is enough to give me a headache and the dry heaves.
However, I really doubt that the color of the bottle was the reason one has gained popularity over the other. Some could be marketing, as if I am not mistaken, Sapphire was marketed to be a super-premium but even then, if people didn't prefer the taste they wouldn't buy in long term. It's just that that taste doesn't match your own.
And it may be just your area that make the original hard to find....I just saw both in the local liquor store yesterday (and not even the nice one...but the little one on the edge of town (it was just closer to my home).
Have you asked your local stores to order it in for you?
There are actually big differences between different gins, and many different types of gin - London Dry, Sloe, Old Tom, Dutch, Western, and others. Those differences can be as large as the differences between Bourbon and Scotch. Original Bombay is a classic London Dry while Sapphire is more of a modern Western Gin.
Compared to the classic Bombay the Sapphire has more aromatics and a higher alcohol content - and therefore the taste is very different. Both are quality gins, and I think any preference for one over the other is just a preference in flavor (classic London Dry vs. Western). I'm not a big fan of Sapphire myself, and would go with classic Bombay over Sapphire for a basic G&T. I try to keep a variety of gins in stock - usually Beefeater, Hendricks's, Plymouth Sloe, and Nolet Silver. I like each for different drinks (the Hendrick's is for G&T's, Beefeater for Negronis, etc.).

I have tried both the original Bombay and Bombay Sapphire and much prefer Sapphire for a gin and tonic. However, in my opinion Hendricks and Tanqueray 10 are probably even better for a gin and tonic. NoLets and Plymouth are also decent. Tanqueray Ranpuer is also extremely good.
Beefeater is probably my least favorite gin.
I would also like to plus some of the gins being produced by some of the micro-distilleries in the States. I just purchased a bottle of Pennisula gin from Grand Traverse distillery and really like it. At the same time, I also found a new tonic concentrate, "Jack Ruby". You mix it with club soda or sparkling water to make a very, very tasty tonic.
