Your friends know that Bud is made by a Belgian company, right?

Bud, Miller, Coors, and (especially) Natty are the ones we drank in college. Not too enjoyable, but they're cheap and will get the job done (i.e. get you drunk). I don't know if it's an "American" mentality, but I've never heard of anyone get criticized for not drinking those beers. Among the non-college crowd it's often the opposite now, actually. Go find some microbrews and other interesting stuff. If you have Total Wine around there, they're great for finding random stuff. You can also buy by the bottle to try a bunch out.

I drink Bud, Bud Ice, and Coors more then anything but I love trying new beers. If you don't want to risk buying alot of beer at a time and not enjoying it, find a restaurant with a huge beer menu. I know We have a couple local places with a beer menu thats 4+ pages. Give Blue Moon a try, it's one of my favorites.

You should try Canadian beers. They are very good. Molson and Labatt's... I like Molson Golden ale, Molson Brador, Molson Canadian, Labatt's beer, Labbat 50 is very good also.

There are very good American beers. I like regular Coors and Miller High Life. I also like Anchor Steam from San Francisco. I do not like Anheuser Busch beers. For imported beers I like Heineken/Light, Amstel, Stella Artois, Hoegaarden, Beck's, Pilsner Urquell, Warsteiner. I also love Foster's Lager.

I hate Sam Adams - most of their beers I can't stand, the couple that I think are OK I won't drink because I hate Sam Adams' image.

Right now the "hot" choice in beer in this area (NYC metro) seems to be Blue Moon. It's OK, but not great.

When it comes right down to it, though, I'll enjoy almost any beer. The whole "beer snob" thing is ridiculous - it goes against the whole notion of what beer is about. If you want to be a snob, be a wine snob where there's more validity to it.

Boulevard Brewing Co.

Boulevard makes some good brews! It's really popular around here.

As a Midwestern boy you need to get out more and try some great American micro-brews! Why not start with something from the homestate: Three Floyds. Gumballhead is their popular wheat beer; you'd probably like Alpha King and perhaps Robert the Bruce.

Moving into Michigan, give Bells a try. Two Hearted Ale is one of my faves.

What about Spotted Cow or one of the other brews from New Glarus,WI?

And those are just a few of the local/regional brews off the top of my head. Don't dis American beer when you haven't even started drinking it yet!
My brother just got back from Maine and brought 4 cases of beer from The Shipyard Brewery. This is good stuff! I am a bit of a baby as I just get sooooo freaking tired of comments at party's or gatherings about my beer. It's constant. I'm thinking of getting a Budweiser cling-on label and slapping it on my bottle just to shut these people up. Seems like BUD is all that's accepted in my area. I have tasted TONS of Micro Brews and love them usually. Oberon is one of my favorites.
I know some of you say Becks and Heineken are "Americanized" beers, and i agree, but in my part of the country it's considered snob beer. Basically if it don't have a Bud label they give you evil looks. It's not paranoia, my 2 buddy's have the same exact expericence...maybe were all paranoid No no no, it's the rust belt and while I don't have much longer before I move west it's still very annoying being in Bud Town.

Thanks Sophia!!! I do say F em!!! I guess I'm just trying to figure out how the golden pee water beers got so popular here. When I was out in L.A. i never had this problem. When my brother visited Oregon, NYC, and Maine he never had this problem. Maybe it's a midwest mentality.

There is a lot of good beer in Maine. I usually prefer lagers, but Shipyard's Export Ale is great. I had some very nice porter at Sea Dog Brewing Company in Bangor, and Gritty McDuff's is doing quite well with brew pubs in Portland and Freeport. Geary's make some good choices too. All of these have some wonderful seasonal products that are well worth trying; summer ales, Fall/Halloween/October brews, Christmas ale.

I like beer. I like Maine. Pretty much an unbeatable combination!

I love Blue Moon! Besides Coors Light, that is my other beer. Maybe I am young and poor and still stick to American Beer, but who cares! I've never been criticized for it!
