I've heard of non-rx allergy or cold medications being used as sleep aids - can you recommend any that have worked?

I've tried non-rx sleep aids like Sominex and they were horrible - felt totally tired the entire next day.

I actually use Ambien but sometimes I have to go to the doctor to get a new rx. It might be easier if I found a non-rx thing that will do the trick.

Most of the OTC sleep aids have the same ingredient as Benadryl. It leaves me bleary the next day. I'd recommend you try melatonin, a small dose about 90 minutes before you want to go to sleep. It's a natural sleep aid.

Benadryl is really good at making me drowsy. if you take a small dose it might work w/o making you groggy the next day.

If you don't have allergy issues, I don't really think it's appropriate to take something for that to try to help you sleep.

I'm not unsympathetic, I haven't slept well in so many yrs. I've lost count. My thinking is: why take drugs that are unnecessary? Have you tried Melatonin?

I use Benadryl. In combination with my prescription allergy meds, as well as another med I'm on, the sleepiness as a side effect is increased greatly. Probably not safe, but it works.

Benadryl works for me, but not for my husband. Try the lowest dose first. Some people find that they are a bit groggy the next day, though, I've never had that problem.

I take Benadryl when I feel like I need a good night's sleep and it works well. It's the same thing as the sleep ingredient in Advil PM.
