I've been taking MSM powder for many years primarily for arthritis pain. It is also suggested for allergy/sinus issues and more. I take upwards of 4 tsps spread thru the day in clean water, not tap water. Start slower and work up if needed.

Grape seed extract is my salvation for allergies and I've talked about it a lot here.

BTW: I learned about higher dosing of MSM from a person with RA on the roadback group.

With chemical sensitivities, a (rare) specialist who had the illness herself, told me it's a matter of the liver not being able to keep up with the detoxification process. She said it was due to overload from a previous high exposure. She talked about something called phase I and phase II detoxification. I've tried googling these but it gets too confusing.

She did talk about alpha lipioc acid and co-enzyme Q-10. There was also magnesium. Also, the importance of total avoidance of household chemicals (something you probably already do) and clean air and water. She said to eat real foods and avoid anything with artificial ingredients. She also used to say, "Green heals"--meaning eat a green vegetable every day. To support the liver, her recommendation was milk thistle, an age old liver protector. I think she also recommended taurine for the liver.

I only heard about MSM for other problems, not multiple chemical sensitivity. But that's not to say it wouldn't help.

This is a little something on taurine. I can't quite figure out how much to take and it says it's for phase 2 detoxification. This may take a lot of work to figure out and what we really need is a doctor--of course, how do you find one who understands this stuff? The expert who taught a lot of other American doctors was Dr Rea in Dallas, Texas. Maybe we can find out more by googling him or his treatments.

Taurine

Here's some more:

Depending upon what you were originally exposed to, this should tell you what you need to be taking.

Ive had many doctors over the past many years and talking to then is like talking to a child about MCS.. they look at me as if Ive just landed on Earth.. one new doctor three years ago...(last time I was near one).... put his head down and said.... We just dont know enough..... I picked up my bag walked to the door, turned round and said.........Isnt it about time doctors and you did know more... disgusted , Ive never been back......... junkies get more help.. and other self destructing illnesses. Ive had this illness now for over fifty years....ok it wasnt as bad a the start, got worse in the late 1980s... and yes Im still here.. but at what price... I feel sick constantly, confused, have headaches, muscle pains.weak with low energy, my eyes suffer badly. always feel gritty and tired,,,,, feel as if I have the flu as soon as I wake in the mornings.. have to push myself to put on a show that I feel normal to my family.. At my age now Id try anything just to feel good before all this happened as a teenager..so Ill be looking into Taurine more now.

Yes, do look into Taurine and also try to match your initial exposure to the supplements on the chart in that last link.

MCS is poorly understood and probably falls into the same bag as CFS and fibromyalgia. Very little research is being done too.

Years ago I belonged to an MCS support group. One member had gotten sick from moving into a brand new house that had carpeting with high levels of formaldehyde and other toxic chemicals. They had to leave their home, take a huge loss, and even then everything the husband tried to rescue from that house had a terrible, sickening smell. They tried to air things out but still ended up throwing a lot of things away.

They were taking the carpeting manufacturing people to court and I hope they won because at the end, both of them were too ill to work.

I think some doctors recognize MCS because I've seen signs in their offices advising people to not wear perfumes and other artificially scented products. Sometimes it's because those chemical scents trigger asthma attacks but one doctor told me that she was sensitive to the odors and would get headaches, dizziness, etc. She said if anyone came into her office wearing anything that smelled, they would have to leave. I assured her that, in my case, she didn't have to worry!

Multiple Chemical Sensitivity did get some publicity after the Gulf War when the returning soldiers came home with it, although in their case, it was called Gulf War Syndrome. Technically it's not allergies, it's a sensitivity. Sort of like gluten intolerance is not an allergy. At least someone who truly has gluten intolerance can simply stop eating gluten. People who have become overly sensitized to chemicals can't always avoid those chemicals, and even if they do, they are still sick because the damage has been done.

Approximately 40% of chemically sensitive individuals are very low in magnesium. I've found that I wasn't even absorbing the magnesium I was taking! Since then I've bought magnesium oil that you rub into your skin.

From the link:

The nutrients such as Taurine, B1, B5, Glycine, Methionine, B12, and Folate need to be taken regularly to improve tolerances to chemicals.

This is to be taken with a grain of salt, I think. We are all different and we need different nutrients. B1 is something I have tested really low for. My B12 and folate were normal. But I was very low in molybdenum, something I'd never even heard of. Turns out it's another one of the detoxifying nutrients!

Usually you can get your doctor to test your blood levels for vitamins and minerals. Maybe you could help your doctor by printing out that list and showing it to him/her.

Taurine and Glycine are amino acids and if you take them, take them away from any protein food--this is very important. Methionine is another amino acid and it's used in cases of acetaminophen (Tylenol) poisoning. I wouldn't try it on my own but I do take taurine and have taken glycine.

I wish you better health. It's so hard when you have an illness of which little is known.
