Tomatoes and spinach are higher in histamines than most other foods. If you have ANY kind of reaction from a high histamine food it IS an allergic reaction.


Anafalactic shock is just one of many reactions to histamines.

Other reactions may be headaches, nausea, dizziness, blurred vision, itchy mouth/tongue.

To increase the availability of antihistamines without drugs try drinking a lot of water and vitamin c.

Unfortunately I think I also have a raw tomato allergy. It irritates my skin if I touch it and I scratch my fingers until they are sometimes red raw. We are just coming into the season for fresh outdoor tomatoes so I have been buying the tasty ugly ones. My fingers have painful hives all over them.

the more you are introduced th the culprit...the more and more severe the reaction...

Belly aches not anaphylactic...not "true" allergy. Sensitivity, or reaction.

Default another freak weighs in...

I've got the same thing -- processed tomatoes fine; but raw tomatoes, or not processed very much, make me heave.

Besides tomatoes, I'll eat most anything, and enjoy it. Like you, pizza is fine and chili is fine and so forth. I've always been perplexed, and others have always been skeptical.

I thought that maybe it was some weird psychological thing. (My dad loved raw tomatoes, and felt others should, too.) But if it was, I wouldn't gag on tomato products unless I knew they were there. I've had a number of cases where I had no reason to suspect something contained tomatoes, gagged on it, and on investigation found it DID contain tomatoes.

I don't recall having a gag reflex with anything else, with the exception of a few political doctrines...

Summer can be miserable here in the land of tomato sandwiches!!! One and I'm ok, but any more than 2-3 tomatoes in any single week and my mouth is one big ulcer! It's because of the acidity....

I would just cut out the nightshades from my diet for a month then reintroduce ONE for 2 weeks and watch for reactions. If none are noticed stop the one you just tested and try another one . Test each one the same way , remember only .... ONE AT A TIME. ................

If we would all eat a species appropriate menu as our ancestor paleolithic Hunter and Gatherers did , most if not ALL modern disease would be cured or greatly ameliorated.


I will never go back to feeling crappy and thinking it is 'normal' .

If your doc tells you that you are good as or average for your age group ............... this is not acceptable to be compared with other sick and diseased people.

Cut out all seed and grains .............. Remember if you cannot digest it as presented to you in nature DON"T EAT IT ! ..............................

Fresh uncooked tomato will break my mouth out in canker sores. I can eat a tomato products and suffer not ill consequences.


So will pinapple. I don't know why, but I learned to just avoid them.

I am so happy to hear that someone else has this. I also thought I was losing my mind. It took a couple of weeks for me to narrow it down to tomatoes. I don't understand it at all, If I eat a fresh uncooked tomatoe, I will be balled over crying. The pain is sooo bad. It's like my body is rejecting them. I love tomotoes. Sometimes I try to convince myself that it won't be as bad, or maybe if I only eat a little. I am wrong every time. It's always bad. My husband didn't think I was crazy, but I think he thought I was the only one with this.

For me, it doesn't matter how much of a raw or unprocessed tomato I eat. Yesterday, I had TWO small diced (1/4 of an inch long, 1/8 inch wide) that was hidden in my salad. Within minutes my stomach was turning and within an hour I was throwing up and well that wasn't the only thing I was doing in the bathroom. My body reacts to tomatoes like they are poison to my system. Everything turns into liquid almost instantly and my body demands the removal. I once accidently had a piece 1inch by 1 inch hidden in a meal. I was violently sick for days!

My family has always told me it was just in my head. Yet at times, I don't even know I ate a tomato until I see it after I threw up. How is that being mental? But because I love ketchup...my family thought I was making it up. As for raw vs cooked vs processed. Raw is 100% out. Cooked...I don't test it so I don't know. Processed...Ketchup is fine but some salsa's and pasta sauses are out as well. Processed tomato juice is also a no-go!

I don't get hives and my breathing doesn't get cut off. I just get VIOLENTLY ill and my body reacts like it's food poisoning. Am I allergic or just intollerant? Does it really matter? I will not touch them and I will not eat them unless I know from past experiences that my body doesn't reject them. I am glad I am not alone!

This is a fascinating (and informative!) thread for me.

Just this week I zeroed in on raw tomatoes as a food that makes me sick. I've always liked them, have always eaten them. In the last couple months, my diet has undergone a drastic overhaul. I don't eat a lot of processed tomatoes, but I do get a bit -- usually in the form of picante sauce when I make beans, or as sauce on a traditional pizza. They've not bothered me at all.

But I ate a few slices of tomato on a Margherita pizza this past Monday...and had to leave work in the mid-afternoon so I could go home and (ahem!) be private. Oh, so sick!!

I think it's fascinating that I could be okay with the cooked/processed tomatoes, but not with the raw ones. Whoduvthunkit??

Incidentally, I CAN do onions and garlic, raw or otherwise, with no evidence of sickness.
