I'm about to start year three of poor health, and I am so done feeling so sick. I know much of what's been happening was caused by chemo and radiation, and now I am in a position to focus the next few months on healing and regaining strength and stamina.
I can go anywhere in the world, I hope to find someplace where I can re learn how to nourish myself, rebuild fitness, and hopefully volunteer or otherwise be useful in some way.
However I'm not fabulously wealthy, so while six months at the Canyon Ranch might be ideal, it's probably not the solution for me.
So here's the question--
If you could escape from you routine for six months, had a modest budget and a need to focus on rebuilding your health--where would you go? And why there?
In my imagination I see a warm, safe place near the water where I can learn to harvest and prepare maybe raw but def nourishing foods. Maybe its paleo/hunter gatherer--who knows?
Ideally I could also teach an English class a few times a week, or otherwise be useful, and get into the habit of incorporating daily yoga/tai chi type of movement as a gentle start.
Scuba really calls to me too, my instinct is that hours every day spend in the water will be very good for my overall stamina and emotional well being.
Otoh, if your best idea happens to be in say, Iceland, I want to know about it!
Suz, I remember you asked this question several months ago and several of us extended some ideas, including me. Hopefully you looked up Transitions Abroad at least? What have you come up with so far? As for me, I just came off of 2 weeks working on an organic farm in Northern Missouri, and it had no electricity or running water and we ate lots of veggies and brown gritty porridge-y type stuff--I feel great. Go anywhere that the majority of the food is real and you'll get healthier, but the real key is to go--start making those plans and stop stalling!
One suggestion I'd like to make but I can imagine that 99.9% of people would reject it: The fastest way I know to regain your health is to go on an extended fast. I just finished a 21 day fast about a month ago and the benefits are still showing up--it cleared up many minor health concerns and began to shrink a tumor, so we are talking major benefits. I also lost a total of 18 lbs that I have not gained back--well actually I lost 25 lbs and then gained back 7 lbs, which is to be expected. Research this and if you don't feel you can do it on your own then start by looking for a fasting retreat in a tropical country. There is a man on youtube, Loren Lockman, who talks about this and he got me started. Disclaimer, do not try this without researching thoroughly. I kept a journal. Oh yes, and just re-read your first post. Fasting is esp beneficial for cancer patients and much research is bearing this out--look up the work of Valter Longo.

Asheville,NC. Its sort of a new age/alternative healing place.
Thanks for your replies!
I've spent the past six months researching, this post is more of that I guess.
Thanks for the suggestions, Bali is definitely on the list, Asheville isn't warm or exotic enough for me at this time, though I like the area well enough and may even buy a property there some day.
A girlfriend is thinking of Cambodia and Vietnam for three weeks in the spring, I'll likely join her, so that's the start of a plan anyway.

Someplace very warm and humidity would be good too. Depending on your budget I would strongly suggest Costa Rica. Beaches, warm weather, and fabulous fruit. If you decide to remain in the states I would suggest somewhere like Florida's Gulf Coast down near Fort Myers or possibly one or two hours north of Tampa. Far enough away from the larger cities and the west coast of Florida is slower paced than the east coast. You want to be in a relaxed state while you are detoxifying. Cut out the meats, dairy, and even grains. Some veggies and primarily lots of fruits. And if you can afford it, some organic herbs.
