COPIAPO, Chile (AP) - For 33 men found alive after 17 days trapped deep in a copper and gold mine, the toughest challenge now may be preserving their sanity during the months it may take to carve a tunnel big enough for them to get out.

Chileans were euphoric Sunday after a narrow drill broke through 2,257 feet (688 meters) of solid rock to reach an emergency refuge where the miners had gathered.

I think that this is the suckiest situation ever. Surely they could get enough assistance to get those guys out a lot faster? I can't imagine being stuck underground for a week much less months, and think that none of these guys will be the same after their ordeal. I hope that a miracle comes their way and they get rescued soon.

Drill Breaks Through to Trapped Chilean Miners.

(Oct. 9) -- Rescuers have successfully drilled down into the deep chamber where 33 Chilean miners have spent more than two months trapped half a mile underground, but officials say the miners won't see the light of day until at least Tuesday.

Sirens and bells rang out across the Chilean desert at around 8 a.m. local time today, signaling that one three drills safely penetrated an underground pocket where the miners have survived for the past 66 days.

For anyone who reads Spanish, here's a link to a great article about two of the operators of a T-130 drilling rig, who were brought in as contractors from the USA. They spent over a month working non-stop on the drilling project. You can tell from the photo that they have been working hard, to say the least. The article also shows how humble they are in speaking about the accomplishment.
