In a previous thread there was a question as to whether Jamaica should be colonized again in order to improve the country. I want to know what is needed at the grassroots level in order for Jamaicans to succeed. Something that will last over time.

Screw Colonism.

Jamaicans [along with much of the rest of the Caribbean&Central America] need to fix their crime problems. Crime in many of these nations are ridiculously high. There needs to be some kind of cultural movement to preach discipline and further emphasize the importance of education instead of just sitting around drinking rum, making mixtapes, dancing and smoking weed (not saying all these people do this so don't say i'm generalizing). The more educated and moral the people are: the less crime a society would have. Very few educated people would join a gang, murder somebody or do petty crap like pick-pocketing and the such.

The less crime, the more attractive a nation is in the eyes of foreign investors. The more foreign investors, the more jobs. The more jobs the more money. The more money the better off the government is.

Isn't that something like telling East St. Louis or Camden or Gary to fix its crime problem? Do you have any ideas about how to do that?

Crime is cultural. You need to "fix" the culture first, then the crime rate will follow along. There are countries with much lower crime rates, but the money still doesn't flow in. I doubt if "preaching" is the way to do it.

If people believe that stealing from each other is an economically viable career option, how do you convince them that it's not? A Jamaican kid can easily look around and see that the thieves are better off than their victims, so what alternative options are you prepared to offer that will yield convincing results?

Crime is ridiculously high in the Caribbean due to the drug trade, which travels up the islands and is fuelled by a huge demand from the wealthy nations up north aka USA, Canada and Europe. Very few islanders use or can even afford to sustain a drug market demand; it comes solely from the rich.

Until the richer nations accept their own blame in the drug trade and preach discipline and further emphasize the importance of education instead of just sitting around using drugs all day(not saying all these people do this so don't say i'm generalizing) nothing will change.

The Government or somebody needs to start a movement/cultural revolution in which discipline, civility/non-violence and value of education is further emphasized. Parents need to be far more strict on their children's education, parents need to start bringing back whoopins; I think it's totally reasonable to whip your kid if they get anything less than an excellent grade in school! You know.. start with the younger generations.

YES, that is not an easy thing to do. I 100% realize that.

I think Jamaicans and other high-crime nations throughout the world can learn a lot from East Asians since they are a very disciplined, productive and focused people as a whole.

But Jamaicans are strong people, they went through the Rastafarian movement and others. So at least we can say it's possible.

What about fighting poverty? Poverty breeds all sorts of problems from crime to poor health. The problem is, how do you fight poverty in a country where the majority of income comes from tourism and now tourists don't even want to go to Jamaica due to the crime.

What better way to fight poverty then to create jobs for those people?

The less crime; the more attractive a nation it is for foreign investors.

Plus, I think innovation is important, create your own businesses. For the people in Jamaica who do have some money: invest. Think like a Westerner. Jamaica has a large diaspora so these people have an even better opportunity to learn business skills.

I think a big problem among many groups is that they sit around and rely entirely on other governments to support them, especially in the most poorest nations of the world like some in Africa. But you could just be investing in your own nation and utilize your own resources and not wait until entities like China have to step into the picture and rob you blind.

jtur88.....
You sate that you need to "fix" the culture and then the crime rate will drop. Wrong.
In Jamaica the crime rate is not a result of the culture but rather an intrical part of. Jamaica main cultural activity seems to be harrasing, beating, and even killing homosexuals for no other reason than the newest raggae song encourages them to.
If Jamaicans want to live in a civilized society they have to start acting like civilized people.
