To compare Carnival in New Orleans to Trinidad or other Caribbean and South American places is silly; it's completely different.

I agree with refraining from comparison.
But it makes sense that Mardi Gras as the last day/comparison of Carnival, pretty much like the Carnival Tuesday (Parade of the Bands) in Trinidad (and some other places) is the last day/culmination. People walk for miles and miles from before that as well, from Jouvert (Sunday night) through Carnival Monday and then Tuesday. You rest on a beach or wherever on Ash Wednesday.
What is it like in Mobile?
