Hi earlier yesterday I saw some articles on people who are Latino/Mexicans. Now a few people on that list are actually Latino/Mexican, in my opinion, but the rest are American with some Latino percentage or lineage. But are they automatically considered Latino? I ask this because I am half South American and father is from South Asia. I don't consider myself Latina nor do I feel like it, I apologize if that is weird. I look like my mother so Americans think I am Latino. I speak fluent Spanish not only because I grew up speaking it but I learned I in college taking advanced Spanish courses to master the language and lived in Mexico for a Summer long ago. But I don't *feel* Latina, when I go to my mom's country I feel so American and when I go to my dad's country I feel American . I am proud of my family's history. But these articles makes it seems Latin blood outweighs anything else! Or maybe I am just confused.
I know these articles mean well but I find them misleading. Or maybe I am over intellectualizing!
Latino is not a race I know, but I always thought a Latino is someone who grew up in Latin America, or both parents are Latino/Mexican. Am I correct?
What is a South American and a South Asian anyway? Very general statement....
Continents are not a race, they are geographical areas.
The average American will go to hell and back to tell you all their 6 different nationalities that their relatives descend from including English, Irish, Scottish, Dutch, French....and don't forget "Cherokee" lol.
Who are you to tell who isn't Mexican and who is not? Can't they identify with that part of their lineage?
Heck they are some people who will claim they are native americans because they have 1/32 "Cherokee" haha
Just because these people do not look like a stereotypical Mexicans (mix) does not mean they are not Mexican. Mexican is not a race, its a nationality. Way before the U.S took the southwest, the territory belonged to Mexico. People of Spanish descend settle this desert region where few amerindians lived to do its unfavorable geography. It is obvious that some of these settlers intermarried Americans coming from the east later on.
Wow, Sorry I didn't mean to hit a nerve with you guys. I apologize for sounding too general, if you want to know, they are from Bolivia, and Nepal. I just always wanted to know this question.
I've been to L. America, and I know well that Latinos come in all colors. Heck my favorite Mexican singer is Emmanuel, and he is a red headed, white as a ghost man...! So I know you cant *look* Mexican.
Actually I feel silly now posting this...I have an old friend who teaches uni. and he gave me the perfect answer to my question in an email, he teaches History. You both are kind of wrong btw. Thanks! I still love this forum.
