Here I was hoping there could be one thread where the word "America" is clearly being used for the United States without someone hopping on talking about Spanish-speaking countries in South America.

There is a general US thread maybe they should open U.S related threads over there.

so then say the United States.
Welcome to the globalised world where not everyone in the remaining 95% of the world uses terminology the same way as the 5% that live in the US.

It's a C-D thing. I've never encountered anyone in real life from other countries who are as hopelessly confused over that term as I have here. Just let it roll off your back.

Only confused peole here are you. America is a continent not a country. U.S has its own section why not avoid confusion by opening U.S topics in its coresponding subforum.

Luis, as a clearly fluent English speaker living in English Canada, you are above this. Do we really need to play this game? I'm pretty disappointed to say the least, because you usually make intelligent discussion. The "America is a continent not a country" argument is the lowest form of intellectual conversation. Living in Canada I find it absolutely unbelievable that you wouldn't know exactly what the OP meant by "America", especially when all the cities listed are in America (excuse me, the United States of America). You and I both know that when you walk into that store in Toronto and say "I'm from America" everyone knows are talking about the United States of America, and not the United Mexican States.

The meaning of the word 'American' in the English language varies according to the historical, geographical, and political context in which it is used. American is derived from America, a term originally denoting all of the New World (also called the Americas). In some expressions, it retains this Pan-American sense, but its usage has evolved over time and, for various historical reasons, the word came to denote people or things specifically from the United States of America. In modern English, Americans generally refers to residents of the United States;
Mexican people (Spanish: Mexicanos (individuals), Pueblo mexicano (collective)) refers to all persons of the United Mexican States, a multiethnic country in North America
Brazilians (brasileiros in Portuguese, IPA: [bɾɐ̞ziˈlejɾus][4]) are all people born in Brazil. A Brazilian can be also a person born abroad to a Brazilian parent or a foreigner living in Brazil who acquired Brazilian citizenship.
Not a single one of these says a damn thing about the people in these other countries in the Americas being referred to as Americans. Now what's your excuse?

You know, I posted this in the world forum because I wanted to get the opinions of those in other countries who I thought could provide a different perspective. I guess my expectations were a little too high.
