Been to the Bahamas lately? Then your cell phone calls were apparently recorded by the NSA and stored for up to a month. According to Edward Snowden-leaked documents obtained by The Intercept, the NSA has been recording all of the Bahamas' cell calls—without the Bahamanian government knowing it—with a secret system called SOMALGET, which stores actual conversations, not just metadata.
I have relatives in the Bahamas but I don't care what they listen into. They should be focusing their attention on China. They're stealing everything that's not tied down. Everything that sets the USA and it's technologically apart and ahead of the rest of the world. As for the Bahamas, I assume many of the world's spies, terrorists and other riff-raff are there to rub noses with the rich and famous.
The NSA has been spying on American citizens (and even non-citizens) for decades. We are simply confirming it now. While it is an invasion of privacy, as long as you are not planning some terrorist attack somewhere and shared the details with someone via a phone, there's not much to worry about.
At the very least NSA agents probably have been bored with typical talk of granny and the kids, has gotten a little excited with talks of family feuds, and probably quite excited at some of the sexually nuanced conversations between couples separated by long distances. Other than that, meh...
I am wondering why focus on the Bahamas in particular for listening into cellphone conversations.
Isn't it a place associated with supposedly very rich and powerful people? I guess those types are more likely to be up to shenanigans. Not that I think it's justified.
