I know that is is very close to a Sheraton hotel, you can actually see it in the background in the pictures, and when you look up the hotel, you can see what I'm guessing is the house slightly to the East of the house. It's not in the main part of the fevela, it's seperated again pretty much by the Hotel.

I could specify if needed, but generally speaking how safe is the area? I've read that Vidigal is a pacified favela but I wanted to get more input on it if possible.

Thanks for any responses.

Why do you want to stay there? For us brazilians this gringo's fetish seems so silly...

This question led me to another question, for anyone who wants to talk about it:

Why are foreigners so obsessed for Rio's favelas?
They're so commom in other brazilian cities, as well as other third world cities, but they're not portrayed like here, and not sought like here.

Probably because hotels in the favelas are cheaper.

In Brazil, it's the name given to any urban settlement irregularly built in a squatted area, without any kind of authorization.

Most of the favelas in Brazil are over 30 years old, and now have solid houses, with running water and electricity, but the streets inside the favelas are usually very narrow and it's often impossible to drive a car on those streets. That includes police cars, so the areas are often a paradise for criminals to hide.

According to Census data, around six percent of the Brazilian population lives in favelas, a little over 12 million people, in a country with a total population of two hundred million.

Mr Falcon, I agree with you - I have been to Rio more than 50 times yet I never felt any desire to go into or tour a Favela any more than I would want to go see a FARC camp in Colombia. However, I know several people who did. Personally, I think people paying for tours of favelas is a really stupid thing but I could not convince them of that.

I guess this is just an enterprising local capitalizing on the curiosity of foreigners.

I don't know, maybe some go into favelas thinking they are going to pick up females?

He doesn't have a fetish, he just has a simple question about the safety of the area. He asked questions about traveling to Rio on a budget in the travel section, he's thinking of renting a place off of AirB&B. He was referred to the Americas section so that native Brazilians can help him.

Don't look too much into it, if you have the information just provide it to help the guy out. Don't turn the thread into something else.

The thread is about hospitality in slums. Most native brazilians think it's ridiculous, like me.
