Which other places? I suspect it is strongest in areas where fewer Iberian women settled. Not sure about Spaniards but Portuguese women by and large have never kissed their mens feet like what you see throughout Latin America.
I think so too, Northern Mexico is mostly agringados and it's probably the worst place to be a woman, especially Ciudad Juarez!

I looked up Ciudad Juarez. Domestic violence against women historically tends to shot up when men feel like their power is being taken away or challenged. It tends to be a more common trend that when a man feels he is being oppressed by society it is often the woman or children in his family that bear the cost of his anger. In my opinion that machismo attitude is very common in Trinidad so I should not really be surprised on the stats. I know quite a few from Trinidad. I hate to throw this negative generalization out there, but many of the men I know from Trinidad (not the really the ones that grew up outside of Trinidad) especially if they come form family that are wealthier are very domineering, womanizers or both. Very charming at first, but one in a relationship with them the situation changes significantly. My father was not like that (so I am not saying all men from there are like that), but my Uncles, Cousins and male extended family members would all get a 0 in fidelity and supporting feminism and gender equality department. Mind you Trinidad had a female Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar. Then again Canada and the USA have never had a female Prime Minister or President and were are supposed to be so modern thinking in terms of feminism.
Trinidadian taking over the world one city at a time ..

Trinidad is an Island and the population is small compared to many other countries, but no matter where in the world I am I always accidently end up meeting Trinidadian people at nonspecific places. In my city I always end up working with people from Trinidad just by fluke. It is really funny. We must accidently magnetically get drawn towards each other. I often wonder if there is anyone left on the Island because I keep on running in to them everywhere .

Northern Mexico is huge and pretty diverse IMO. My father's family is from Baja California and many of my friends are as well. They are super liberal people and a lot less conservative than other parts of Mexico.

Ciudad Juarez is its own grotesque, sad place.
Oh that's pretty cool. But it's true that Ciudad Juarez seems macho to the point of being scary, in addition to Tijuana and some other northern cities! I read stories online about how guys in those cities are so careless and they just do horrible things to girls just because they feel like it...

I'm sure there is some crazy stuff going on in Tijuana, but I dated many tijuanenses....they were pretty normal guys.
That city has a bad reputation but I love it- there is a very eclectic, cool hip side to it that many foreigners don't know about. They have an amazing, huge art festival and really good cuisine. Every time I introduce foreigners to it, they love it and are shocked at the normalcy of the city.
At the same time, there's alot of people arriving to the border areas, hundreds or thousands daily. Mexicans and non-Mexicans. This brings lots of poverty, desperateness, hopelessness, drugs, many sad things. That is why chaos and violence have built up there. It's sad.
