1. They don't speak English (no annoying english speaking culture shoving itself down your throat)
2. Out of the list, the only one that is not overly gentrified, and sterile looking and then you drive 3 miles and you're in a ghetto!
3. It's got soul
4. SF is a yuppy paradise full of starbucks and champagne socialists. (overrated), Chicago is a run down dangerous place, DC is a sterile town full of politicians and bureaucrats, toronto is a truly lame place!
Can't comment much on the other cities but that is definitely true, except for downtown which is pretty nice, Chicago looks bad and dangerous overall.
Really?! I actually found it quite safe, walking around Chicago at night, compared to New York that I had visited previously (as I'd bumped into a few weirdos in New York, at night).
I voted for Chicago, as I really liked it there, especially going up to the 90-something-th floor of the John Hancock Center. Wow, what a view of the city from there!
I haven't been to any of the other cities mentioned.
For what it's worth, the poverty in Chicago is really segregated/concentrated. This causes it's own problems, and the racial and economic segration is one of the reasons why there is so much violence and desperation in parts of the city. However, from a pedestrian standpoint, there are very few areas that I would walk around in where I would feel really unsafe. A lot of the worst places in the city are not places I would find myself going to to go see a show, go to an interesting bar/restaurant, or visit a friend.
In SF, the "bad areas" and the "good areas" are often close together (sometimes within the same neighborhoods), and the city covers a much tinier geographical area, so if anything I feel much less safe walking through many neighborhoods in SF. I find there's more block to block variability, especially in neighborhoods that are close to transit (most of the quiet safe neighborhoods are more remote).
It's so fun to watch TROLLA101 and mannitopia get their panties in a bunch every time Toronto is mentioned, so predictable and I'm just waiting for one of them to have an aneurysm, keeping my fingers crossed!
I haven't made a post on this thread for 2+ months and only commented once without any opinion. Your obsession with me is getting creepy now. And considering Toronto is tied for last on this thread, I'm not sure why you're cheering.

Disagree with this poster.... OVERALL BAD NO. Gentrification helped the cities OLDEST Neighborhoods. Just not the worst areas south in crime....... In time there is plenty there to infill again.
