Guatemala is the only central American country that is heavily indigenous. Guatemala suffers from a high crime rate and women are unfortunately victims of violent crime too often. Having said that, the high levels of violence occur mostly in Mestizo areas of Guatemala or in Guatemala city where indigenous people live in the worst squalor. In the highlands or Altiplano where the vast majority of people are Indigenous, rates of violent crime are much much lower, specially when compared to Guatemala city, southern Guatemala or neighboring central american countries.
Yup, even in countries with a lot of indigenous people, it's usually not the indigenous people themselves who commit most of these crimes. Andean Highlands and many populated places in la selva are probably the safest parts of Peru, Iquitos in the northern jungle has the lowest reported homicide rate in Peru. It's an isolated city that can only be reached by plane or boat; it's not exactly an ideal drug trade route. In Ecuador it seems like they have the same trend, where the indigenous cities like Cuenca, Ambato, Quito are the safest ones, whereas the non-indigenous Guayaquil is renown for being grimy and dangerous

It's important to get opinions from people who actually know the places they are referring to. I'm glad you are here to dispell stereotypes about Guatemala.

It's people with racist tendencies who want to place blame on indigenous people for 'violent' tendencies.

Never been to Guatemala but please get your terms right!
Mestizo means "mixture" of Amerindian and European blood! It does not mean indigenous!
Mestizos can come in all forms or skintone depending on how the genetics are passed down and intermarriage.
I am technically Mestizo and I never committed a crime. But then again, my family is from Mexico, and not Central America (I have friends from there and they are quite nice).

Wtf? My comment was pretty clear. I was speaking about a specific country.
42 out of the 50 most violent cities in the world are Latin / mestizo.
