Can you realistically get by speaking American English in Belize? English in Belize is barely English within the Anglosphere (AU, NZ, CAN, USA, UK, IRE, and RSA).
It is almost a shock that the ONLY one official language is English. They are formerly called British Honduras, yet don't really have any British culture in their own. They all speak Spanish basically.
Jamaica, or Trinidad & Tobago I would say are truly English speaking countries. But not Belize, they are more Spanish speakers than the British of Gibraltar

Interesting...I know there have been rapid demographic changes there but as far as I know you definitely can get by speaking only English.

Main languages are English and Kriol. Majority speak English, Spanish or Creole. Spanish and English are taught in schools. Bilingualism is common and the literacy rate is about 80%

you can "get by just fine" speaking only English in Belize, though you may find yourself in a Spanish-majority town if you travel around in search of the best scuba/dive spots in the world, right there in Belize.

Oh, and try Marie Sharp's carrot-habanero hot sauce from Belize, if you haven't already.

That is shockingly low for an English speaking nation

I went there almost 5 years ago. Had a great time. I had no problem with communicating with people in English. In fact that's why I went there in the first place. Dontg know what the situation is now but I wouldn't hesitate to travel back there again.

The official language of Belize is English and the majority speak it, however, the country has a diverse population and you may find areas where only Spanish, Arawak, or other languages are spoken. Many times, English speakers will speak with a Kriol dialect.
