Wow...I knew the situation was bad there but this is worse than I thought...wish I could get an objective viewpoint of what has happened in Venezuela over the last 20 years but just like Cuba, when communism is involved, there is no middle ground...I definitely know that Chavez and crew made mistakes and flirted with authoritarianism just as I know there were efforts at destabilization... the pictures speak for themselves though as to the humanitarian crisis that is present day Venezuela
If Venezuelan women were wearing hijabs and nikabs there would be an outcry of sympathy and support from western countries. We would be letting them in by the tens of thousands. We barely hear about this **** on the news here. Latin Americans are hated here in North America. Now Colombia has to deal with this all on their own.

I actually agree. It's annoying how crises in Latin America are ignored. So much sympathy for refugees from Middle East, but nobody gives a crap about those from El Salvador or Venezuela...

Colombia is hit hard because its the closest country to Venezuela with a working and large economy to more or less absorb hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans. From what I can tell, not many Venezuelans are fleeing in the other direction towards Guyana.
Other Latin American countries have seen an uptick in Venezuelan immigration, both legal and illegal. From Argentina to Panama, from Peru to Dominican Republic; Venezuelans are a very fast growing minority group. The only Latin American countries that haven't seen a sizeable uptick of Venezuelan immigration are Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Cuba. Everywhere else where Spanish is spoken now has more or less visible Venezuelan minority.
Then there's the USA with places such as south Florida where the Venezuelan crisis is a very real thing because of the fast growth of the Venezuelan presence. The city of Doral, near Miami, is basically an extension of Caracas. I wouldn't be surprised if most the people in that city are from Venezuela.
I do agree with you that generally Latin America is ignored in North America and in many places in Europe. Almost no one in these places know who Oscar Perez was, yet in many Latin American countries the fate of this Venezuelan police officer that revolted against Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro's government is well known. It took place a mere 3 weeks ago. The current Venezuelan government is willing to do anything to keep the power, even if it means massacring its own people.
The Venezuelan army threw everything towards his house, including grenades and missiles, despite that he had surrendered. They wanted him dead. You just don't disagree with Nicolas Maduro and his dictatorship and get away with your life.
Even in Guatemala and El Salvador the Venezuelan community has been growing. Not like Panama or Colombia obviously but they are making there presence felt there too. Unlike Central Americans , Venezuelans that move to Guatemala seem to be well off.

Wow, things are changing fast. Not too long ago those countries hardly came up in any reports or maps showing the growing Venezuelan diaspora.
