Venezuela Claims About 50% of Guyana as Venezuelan Territory (country, people, speak)

Venezuela claims all land in Guyana west of the Essequibo River as part of Venezuela, as stolen from Venezuela by the British. This claim goes back to the colonial period and has never been resolved. Is Venezuela right or should Guyana keep it?

With the history of the Western Hemisphere being as it is, right or wrong doesn't matter....Venezuela as a country was a relatively new concept (and was itself a creation borne out of stolen land, colonialism and revolution) when the land was supposedly stolen.... the land should stay with Guyana but it won't as Guyana has a very small population over a large land area. Countries like that tend not to keep sparsely populated large land areas bordered by much larger, heavily populated nations (i.e. Brazil, Venezuela). Suriname also has a claim on Guyana's land but that is a more even fight.


Guyana keeps that land if it effectively sells out the land to powerful nations e.g. USA, China. I dont expect them to lose the land tomorrow or even in the next 20 or 30 years but way down the line, yes they will probably lose it unless they team up with others.

With all of the problems in Venezuela right now, I guess that a war is just what they need to distract the population...

The dispute WAS resolved, back in 1897, and again in 1966. Guyana put down an uprising in 1969 (possibly supported by Venezuela). As a member of the British Commonwealth, one might expect that the queen would have an interest in Guyanese territorial security.

Essequibo was never in Venezuelan hands it was under the rule of the Dutch and then the British. This is why in the past there was Essequibo Dutch(Skepi Dutch) and now people there speak English.

Venezuela has been trying to claim the Essequibo before 1897.

There have been some bandits from Venezuela harrasing Guyanese in the Essequibo town of Aramu but they are a nuisance and mild terror.

These are Guyanese that have been traveling back and forth to Venezuela for years.

I'm sure the people living in that area will appreciate the wise and successful governance of Maduro. He's done wonders with the rest of Venezuela.
