Not many people outside the DR (except Dominicans abroad and perhaps other people that are fans of Dominican Merengue) know who is Félix Cumbé or even heard of him. He was born in Haiti and recently started the process of naturalization to become a Dominican citizen. This process culminated this week with the official ceremony in declaring new Dominican citizens by naturalization. He became well known as a singer in Dominican Merengue and develop a big fan base.

Unfortunately, the following video is in Spanish and I can't find one in English or even with English subtitles. It was done a few days ago in the building the naturalization ceremony took place in Santo Domingo, including parts of the ceremony. At a point in this video he says that he sworn for Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic and if he would have to swear for the DR 1,000 times he will do it. He is the guy in military uniform (not a real military uniform, at least of the Dominican military). Notice the pin of the Dominican flag near one of the buttons.

By the way, the other guy in the dark blue (or black, hard to tell) suit is Silvio Mora. He also became big in Dominican music. He is of a Swiss father and a Haitian mother. He was born in Switzerland and when he was a kid his parents decided to return to Hispaniola, except they decided to settle in Santo Domingo not even knowing the language. Silvio himself said in another interview that when he arrived he didn't know a single word of Spanish, but learn by watching TV. lol Despite being Swiss and having a good chunk of Europe wide open for him to move there and make a life for himself in a rich and developed country, he says he will never leave Santo Domingo and has made a successful life for himself in the city.

Default Félix Cumbé

I remember him from this Merengue by Fernando Villalona (El Mayimbe)
https://youtu.be/se6wGF3MI5Q

Good for him.

Carry on.

Fernandito Villalona is from a town called Loma de Cabrera in Dajabón province. The place is so close to the border with Haiti that I think anyone sneezes and part of the droplets will fall on that side. lol

He still has a house there (what I think is the nicest house in town) where he spends some time.

Hispaniolan citizen doesn't exist. Similar to how anyone from a Central America country moves to another in Central America and becomes a citizen. Same isthmus, yet there is no such thing as "Central American citizen."

The same with Africa, the Middle East, Europe (even with miniscule countries such as San Marino, Monaco, Andorra, Litchtenstein and a few others), North America (Canada and the USA, perhaps many Americans aren't aware how big is the Dominican Republic, for example you can fit 6 Connecticut's in the DR and still have plenty of land - or about the size of Scotland- left while Haiti is roughly the size of Maryland, itself the third largest country in the Caribbean - anyone that thinks they can stay in Punta Cana and do day trips by land to Santiago, Puerto Plata or Barahona are in for a shock, just Santo Domingo takes about 2 hours from there and that's not even halfway through the country and then there id the trip back) and the rest of the world. Even in the Lesser Antilles (who would all fit into the DR and there is still plenty of land left) there are the citizenships of various islands (in some cases citizenship of countries in Europe and North America as they are territories or overseas department) and not the "Lesser Antilles citizenship."

Case in point to what was said in a part of the previous post, here is a website where anyone can see an approximate of the true size of all the countries.

https://www.thetruesize.com/#?border...NDcwNQ(MjI1)Mg

The following examples are of the DR. To get an idea, Punta Cana (the most likely place people from the forum will be if ever go to the DR) is on the eastern extremity near that point further east of the DR).

Greater NYC

Central Florida

Southern Spain

Central Africa

Near The North Pole

lol i still remember before they made the new road it took about 3.5 hours to go from santo domingo to punta cana

damn u get offended quick man. DR and haiti used to be one country pre 1800s so. thats more than enough mixing between the two for generations

not to mention the inseccive amounts of escaped slaves from the french slavers that went from west to east in the boatload (speaking only their african tongues, no creole sicne they were newly arrived) which technically just makes em africans not haitians.

also 90% of the rebels in the haitian revolution were not even from the island, they were african born (u can look this up its sourced)

when they invaded, haitian creole was barely spoken, they were still majority speaking their african tongues (yoruba, kongo, fon etc...) which is why dominican spanish doesnt have a lick of french words, however we do have african influence and words in our spanish, what does that tell ya? exactly

cause once we got our independance from em, alot of em stayed so. which is why we have so many blacks but they were not haitian as i said, they were african born, slaves brought over to the island of hispaniola, only difference is they were brought by the french and not the spanish or portuguese like before that time

The Mercator maps gets bigger the further up and down from the equator. Those maps tend to be the most popularly used in part because countries in North America and Europe like the greater details of their territories. Those are also one of the reason many people underestimate the true size not just of the DR, but Hispaniola and all the islands of the Caribbean. For example, in such maps Greenland appears bigger than South America, but in reality South America is much bigger than Greenland.

Many people imagine the Greater Antilles such as Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Cuba, and Hispaniola to be much more smaller than they really are that once they go there on vacation they realize the error they made, especially if they planned to do certain tours.
