The Argentinian media Infobae on July 1, 2022 published an article (in Spanish) of the 50 cities with the highest homicide rates, focusing on Latin America.

The one that caught my eye was Cancun, Mexico. They live from tourism. Why are they here? International tourism was destroyed in Acapulco for the same reason. Cancun is next?

The other one that caught my eye is Tijuana, Mexico as the 4th most dangerous in the world. They are right next to San Diego, California which is nowhere are nearly as dangerous. Does having a border makes that much of a difference?

The title says "most dangerous" but the statisics only count one of the many forms by which danger can express itself. How can we ever break this misleading habit of equating danger with a tny sub-count of events that occur mainly within a tiny sub-cubicle of society.

Well homicide is the biggest danger (loss of life) vs car theft, burglary or robberies...
What other statistics would you like to see?

With the rate of 138 homicides per 100,000 residents, almost six people are killed every day in Tijuana, according to the Citizens Council for Public Security and Criminal Justice. The group states that the main reasons behind this violence are human trafficking, drug production and drug trades by different gangs.
People are safe for the most part in Tijuana and other parts of Baja California, which sits directly south of the border from California.

The Sinaloa and Arellano Felix cartels have long been at war with each other for “turf.”
In 2018, Jalisco New Generation Cartel’s presence in Tijuana intensified, and now several groups are fighting for control in Tijuana.

It certainly is the worst, but it's far less common than any other kind of crime. And its effects are much less homogeneous on society than other forms of crime (meaning, people from certain social groups are much more affected).

More interesting is that San Salvador, El Salvador has made the list for several years and now is no longer there. That's quite an improvement. On the other hand, Ecuador wasn't known for being violent yet this year Guayaquil made it to the list. I wonder what could be driving homicides there.

Another surprise is seeing Cancun there, considering how important international tourism (mostly from the USA) means for this place. If it keeps making it to the list and I expect its international tourism will go the same way as Acapulco's. Other major competitions for Cancun are Varadero, Cuba; Punta Cana, DR; Negril, JA... yet, they aren't near the list.

Tijuana is right at the border with the USA and is the 4th most dangerous city in the world. Shocking to say the least. This is most likely the Mexican border city most visited by Americans.

None of this is news to me. But what I do find interesting is the distribution of violence within Mexico. The conventional notion seems to be that the worst places for violence are along the Northern border but it moves around a lot.

If you check, for example, the state of Durango homicide rates. In 2010 the state homicide rate was 61.32 in 2020 it was down to 7.97, barely higher than the US.

Colima was the highest rate in Mexico in 2020 with a rate of 71.08, and reached as high as 96.61 in recent years. However back in the mid 2000s they rate was only 5/100k for several years. Guanajuato is the same, moving from rates under 5/100k in the mid 2000s to current rates of 45-55 per 100k.

The only state with stable low homicide rates are Yucatan (less than half of US rate), Aguascalientes and Campeche. Some other states like Hidalgo have generally stayed low(~5/100k) but are inching up to around 10 in recent years

On a day to day, do you worry more about being murdered more than about burglary, pick-pocketing,
second hand smoke, food poisoning, traffic accidents, or any of the many other things contribute to city life being dangerous. When crossing on a Walk sign, who is more likely to pick you off -- a driver turning right with a phone, or a sniper? Underworld turf is the locale for nearly all murders, and those guys are not coming after YOU, to make your life dangerous.

In Tijuana I probably would.

Homicide rates in these cities are undoubtetly higher than pedestrian fatality rates.

In my US state the pedestrian fatality rate is 2.2/100k and the homicide rate is >10x higher in the city. I am more worried about violent crime here and I would be even more so in any of these most dangerous cities.
