Hi all,

I'm learning Spanish, especially but not necessarily the Colombian dialect. I currently can have basic conversations and can read better than I can listen for most dialects, so I'm looking for suggestions of media, preferably also captioned in Spanish so I can read while listening.

Shows, movies, documentaries, youtube channels, etc. are all great, so I'd like to hear about your favorites. I would especially appreciate it if you also posted links for where to watch these.

I suggest you start with news before you dive into movies, novelas, etc. It helped.me immensely because the broadcasters speak clearly and there are usually images and captions accompanying the stories to give you context to follow along. Most US cities have Univision and Telemundo news every evening. Noticias Caracol has its own YouTube channel that gets updated every day if you are looking for something from Colombia. I go there fairly often to keep up with what is happening there ever since I moved back to the US.

Good luck! Once you feel like you understand 80% of the news, you can jump over to movies and series more. Some may disagree with my advice, but starting with news first and then branching out got me to where I am today.

I agree with aab7855. I started in Mexico then moved to Costa Rica. Much of stuff i learned in Mexico is different here. Also many countries spanish is so accented it is hard to understnand clearly.
Like Chilean spanish. Cant understand it.

Best to start out with good clear spanish like mentioned news stories etc. Read newspapers too.

The Secret in Their Eyes
The Spirit of the Beehive
Talk to Her (and other Almodovar movies, he's made like 100)
Wild Tales

And the Mexican movies of Alfonso Cuaron, Guillermo del Toro, and Alejandro G. Inarritu, or very old movies by Luis Bunuel. Movies in Spanish are really easy to find.

Why do people confuse dialects with accents. Dialects infers a change in grammar and sentence structure. The Spanish in Colombia is the same as in Peru or Cuba. Just a different accent, mixed with some slang and colloquialism.

Colombian media is usually one of the more popular ones used in Latin America because its easy to understand.

That sounds like good advice! I'll try Noticias Caracol on youtube.

Meh, it's pretty commonly referred to as dialects online, within academia and by people around me including native Spanish speakers.
