El Salvador was one of the worst for a long time. Right now Ecuador seems to be one of the worst off when it comes to crime. Just saw on the news today in Ecuador a group of armed men took over a tv station when it was live. Another group took over a university. The government delcared a state of emergency and implemented a curfew. Sad to see this sort of crap happening.
Most likely is related to an increase of illicit drug trafficking through the country. That is the one thing that ruin places in Latin America regarding crime and homicide.
Remember that in the 1980's, 1990's and even part of the 2000's Colombia was a no go zone because of the violence. Then the government got involved in its attempt to reduce the crime and today not only is Colombia safer but cities like Medellin, which was ground center for the drug related crime, became a tourism hot spot, unthinkable not too long ago.
Then the drug cartels in Northern Mexico began to grow and achieve the level of importance in the drug trade that Colombia had earlier and guess what happened? Crime and horrific things began to grow and appear in Northern Mexico right to the US-Mexico border. Central and Southern Mexico were not the main places of operation for the drug gangs and, consequently, crime and homicides didn't spike. In recent years even places in Central and Southern Mexico, and even in tourists zones such as Acapulco and increasingly Cancun, have seen a notorious increase in crime. Even the hotels area of Cancun have seen some stuff, though it doesn't compare with the intensity seen in non-touristic Cancun.
Old data. Venezuela is noticeably safer than 4-5 years ago. Now people can calmly walk in most of Caracas, and other Venezuelan large cities, even in crowded sectors of shanty neighborhoods, while openly showing their self phones because they are talking on the phone, on whats app or checking their social media, without fear of being robbed, smuggled or killed, which was something unthinkable 5 or more years ago. There is police presence everywhere, but also neighbor vigilance to avoid crime.
Whoever keeps on claiming that Venezuela is the top most dangerous Latin American country, that Caracas is the top most dangerous city in the whole planet, and bla bla bla... is stuck in 2014-2017

The last year I found data on Argentina was 2021 with a rate of 4.62/100K, which puts it in a dead heat with Chile for lowest in Latin America and pretty close to the USA rate.

That is actually lower than the US. El Salvador was lower than all of the above with 2.4/100k in 2023. It is estimated to go down to 1.7/100k in 2024. That will be even lower than Canadas homicde rate.
Might be, plus the other things that I mentioned (lots of police presence, neighbor vigilance). The criminals who left Venezuela I hope they never come back. I know is unfair for the countries that received them, but they could keep them in prisons or they could die in confrontations with police from those countries, so they don't **** anybody.
