The media needs to stop messing with Haiti’s image. Tourism, particularly the sun & surf kind, is the one thing they have huge potentials and it will not develop with a bad image. Haitian government officials will have to get together with the CEO’s of several of the largest and most influential medias and see if a policy is adopted by them to not give Haiti more negative publicity. Otherwise, tourism is never going to develop there except for maybe small ventures here and there.
Interesting that the media makes it seem Haiti has the worse homicide in the Americas, but in reality Jamaica is worse. Somehow the media isn’t focused on Jamaica as they are with Haiti. Jamaica’s homicide rate isn’t stopping millions of people from vacationing there.
St Lucia is another place slightly more dangerous than Haiti and it has a robust tourist industry. The media doesn’t remember that St Lucia exist.
Well 1, not that many airlines are flying to Haiti and 2, do they have any functioning resort? Jamaica has that stuff.

At least in the US Haiti is rarely mentioned. It happens when a Prez gets whacked or a gang kidnaps Americans doing charity work there. Or of course an earthquake. Our media really does not cover Latin America well.
Here's what things were like in Latin America in 2023.
Are you sure that El Salvador's homicide rate is that Low? I always had the impression it was extremely high. That's one reason why Salvadorians are the #1 Hispanic immigrant group in metropolitan Washington D.C.

It's hard to believe but yeah. El Salvador has drastically reduced it's homicide rate. I have been there when it was a it's rock bottom worst and never had any issues. Now that it's actually safe I will get to explore more freely.
Haiti is unstable. The other Caribbean islands referenced are not. No different than Mexico having areas with some of the most horrific criminal violence on Earth while still maintaining a tourism industry with millions of visitors. The stability, or perceived stability, is the key.
Also I am not sure about those numbers for Haiti. Last year was supposed to be particularly violent for Haiti and those numbers don't seem to reflect that.

I don't think Haiti has a functioning government to report legit stats.

For all the trash Mexicans talk about other Latin American countries they sure do have a disastrous crime rate.
and what's their crime rate? because this thread only shows homicide rates.

Haiti's situation is one of many examples on why you have to take homicide rate figures with a grain of salt. Haiti indeed probably has a lower homicide rate than several LatAm countries, but it's obviously much less safe. I just read today in the newspaper that criminal gangs are trying a coup d'etat by terrorist attacks targeted towards public buildings, hospitals, airports, prisons... Wow!
