Two Capitol Riots. Two Very Different Results.
Leaders on Brazil’s right “publicly, clearly, unambiguously accepted the results of the election and did exactly what democratic politicians are supposed to do,” said Steven Levitsky, a Harvard professor of government and co-author of the book “How Democracies Die,” who studies both the American and Brazilian democracies. “That is strikingly different from how Republicans responded.” https://www.yahoo.com/news/two-capit...181446618.html
Well, actually the months of November and December of 2022, after the elections, were vere tense months in Brazil, in terms of politics. Many people feared a Trump style insurrection led by Bolsonaro before he left government on January 1st. That didn't happen. But on January 8th, 2023, the big surprise came in the form of the insurection in Brasilia after Bolsonaro left government.
Fortunately, the insurection wasn't sucessfull, and was broadly condemned by all political parties, including Bolsonaro's own political party, Partido Liberal (PL). The organizers were mostly arrested, and Jair Bolsonaro was ultimately barred from partipating in elections for the next 8 years by the Supreme Court.
On a side note, Brazil's electronic voting system is very safe, the electronic voting machines work 100% offline with no network connection, making them virtually unhackable. The tabulation of votes is made on central sites in each region, from the SD cards of the machines. Before the machines leave the voting stations, the results of each machine are printed on paper (boletim de urna - BU) and displayed on ther doors or walls of each voting session, allowing any citizen to take pictures with their cell phones and post it online, making it virtually impossible to change the SD cards during the transportation to the tabulation central sites. Any attempt to do that would be quickly revealed because the BU equivalents to those SD cards were previously printed and displayed to the public.
Brazil's electronic voting system was never hacked in 30 years of use, and there was never any incident of proven fraud.
