Hi all,

My wife has accepted a new job in anchorage. They are flying her there in early December then I will be driving a dodge nitro to anchorage from salt lake city Utah at Christmas. From what I've read block heaters oil pan heaters battery heaters etc are not really needed in anchorage but do I need them for the drive to anchorage?

I'd at least get a block heater for the drive up. Most of the hotels in Canada on the Alcan have outlets so you can plug it in at night. If it's really cold where you sleep for the night and you see other cars running, do the same. I'm debating on a drive south for Christmas break.

Thanks warptman,

I do plan on buying all the other heaters and such as time goes on, but it seemed a little excessive to do it all for a trip straight through.

A block heater will make a difference on the drive up. Interior Canada gets very cold, you would not like it if the car won't start from the cold. I'd get one of the sealed batteries for the car, like the Optima series of batteries. Do not drive between Fort Nelson and Watson Lake at night, this part is in the Northern Rockies and there are a lot of animals on the road.

Thanks again for the heads up. I've been watching videos of others making the drive in winter also reading the posts. I have good winter driving experience from living here in Utah. How much before Christmas would you suggest I leave? I saw it took around 50 hrs of driving time to get there from Seattle (I know I won't follow the same roads from here) but I don't want to take off too much time from work on the first trip. I'm staying behind for a couple months to sell all our furniture etc before I come up for good.

Four or five days is a good time to get here, that's how long it takes me most of the time year round. Just keep a heads up on weather ahead and on reports at gas stations/hotels, they normally have a print out in the morning for weather at the front desk. Don't let your tank go below a half tank no matter where you are, don't pass them up!

Thanks again. I can't wait I've been to Alaska before, but I'm so excited to move there. Actually I'm pretty excited about the drive as well. It looks like it'll be absolutely amazing most of the way there.
