I read the teachers still have to show up, that is cruel and unusual treatment.

Teachers don't have to show up to closed schools. Only the administration building is open; however those employees only need to come in if it is safe to do so.

anyone remember 2009?

Here is a Facebook clip I found.

Quote:
As you all know, school was cancelled on Wednesday, January 14th, 2009 due to hazardous conditions such as ice and high-speed winds.
As we all enjoyed the free day and got ready for school early morning of the next day, some of us may have gotten the notice that schools were also closed on Thursday for the same reason. Two days of cancelled school. What more could we all ask for?

Well isn't it obvious? Cancellation of schools on Friday, of course! Many of us may have checked the news, or the asdk website, just hoping for another day of freedom before our three-day weekend.
"A 60/40 chance," the news said, and we all went to bed with our fingers crossed.
Friday morning, we anxiously awoke, checking by any means necessary to see whether schools had been cancelled or not. So we looked on. Website. News. Radio. And to our overwhelming joy, schools had been cancelled.

A 6-day weekend! For the first time I can remember, schools have been cancelled for three days in a row. On top of that, the weekend meant two more days of freedom, and Martin Luther King Jr. day added on another.

This could not have happened without the decision of the superintendent of the Anchorage School District.

Thank you, Carol Comeau.

I remember it well! Only this time we get a 9 day holiday instead of 6!

Thanks so much for posting that- we were trying to remember if that was last winter or the winter before.

I remember St Patricks day in March (2002? 2003?) When we got up to 3 ft. of snow & closed schools for 2 days.
