Hello, I have been in Anchorage since August. I have been waiting for my current verizon contract to expire so I can get an Alaska Number. I am wondering what is the best company to go with, if I up grade to a smart phone? I will be getting a family plan with two phones. If you have a smart phone hear in Anchorage please let me know how it works and if you would go with the same company again.

Thanks

When my verizon phone died, I thought about getting a new one since I had the service here in Anchorage. I also had service when I drove to the Kenai Peninsula. However, I decided that if something happened to my phone since there wasn't a verizon presence here, I better get a local one. I would at least have somewhat better access for problems. Many people have GCI since GCI has now expanded into Western Alaska. AT&T has not expanded there. However, not all the villages in Western Alaska have access to cell phone coverage either. I am a public health nurse that travels to several of those villages, so no matter what, GCI or AT&T was useless in my situation. But given that I would make trips to the lower 48 frequently, I decided to go with an I-Phone from AT&T. I have not had any problems with it. Some have mentioned they have had dropped calls, but I have not.

We switched from T-Mobile to AT&T right before we moved here and have had no problems with it so far.

I had the SAME question when I moved here...I had Nextel, and I found out after I got here that Nextel didn't have that great of service, but Sprint does so I switched. They are the same company but use different service signals or something...lol. I agree with TL551 though, it would be easier if there was a store here, but the last time I had a problem, they sent me a new phone out immediately and it was here in a couple days. Other than that, they have GREAT service in Anchorage, great customer service, and in my opinion, the best prices. AT&T will cost you an arm and a leg for unlimited. I had great service in Anchorage, Eagle River, Palmer, and Wasilla. Seward...not so much. lol.
