We are taking our first cruise to Alaska since we have heard such great things about the trip. We have 3 seniors and two young kids (one is 2 and one is 4) with us (total of 7). We don't have a lot of time spending at both cities after the cruise. Which city should we spend more time at? Appreciate your comments!

Seward then rent a car and drive north a bit if you can!!! Anchorage is a small city that is not what most people who have seen tv about Alaska have in mind at all....stay in the small towns an you will see much more of the real Alaska!!

Anchorage is a young city and doesn't have the sort of in-town attractions that draw visitors to other more established cities. Its main selling point is the proximity to fantastic rural, outdoor oriented destinations - like the Kenai Peninsula. The town of Seward itself is small (but with a beautiful location) and its attractions will eat up no more than a day, so you'll probably want to get on a package tour of some sort. I'm not sure if rental cars are even available. Your cruise company or the visitors center in town should be able to point you to all sorts of fun stuff in the region.

I'd probably stick with Seward too.
Are you also seeing some of the Inside Passage? My mom took the Alaskan cruise a few years back and said it was the best trip ever! (then we took her to Hawaii

Seward, then drive to Anchroage or Homer (Homer-great touristy place if you like that kind of thing, lots of shops, galleries, etc). Most beautiful scenery ever. If you can rent a car in Seward. Might want to book a night or two in Homer if you go that far.

Thank you for your comments. I think we will spend more time in Seward after the cruise - may be take a couple tours there (Kenai Fjords National Park tours and something else). We are planning to take the train to Anchorage (I think the kiddos will like that a lot ^_^). I wish we can spend more time in Alaska, but need more vacation days... like the Europeans...

I think going to Homer and taking a day cruise to Seldovia would be a good time too.

Seward has the Sea Life Center too. It's awesome, especially kids love it.

has anyone taken a flightsee tour in mid May? I was told that mid May may be too soon to land on the glacier (from Seward)... I really want my mom to take the tour... it will be first time for all of us in Alaska, but at her age, it may be the last time, too... so, even though it is costly.. I will still pay for her to do it if it's available.
