As a tourist, I don't want to eat at the same places I have at home. I like the one-off, mom and pop type places... As with anything, some are a great, some are good, and some are just 'OK'.

Yes, I will stop at a Wal-Mart here and there to stock up on supplies and a walgreens makes getting our prescriptions easier when traveling... How easy is it to find unqiue types of meat at the local restaurants? (Moose, Caribou, etc...)

Only domesticated animals can be sold to the general public. While Alaska does not domesticate caribou, other countries (such as Sweden) do. If you go to your local gourmet meat grocery and take a careful look at the label on their caribou, the caribou they sell comes from those other countries. Moose has not been domesticated by any nation, to my knowledge, and therefore is not for sale for public consumption. Alaska does have domesticated reindeer, a close cousin to the caribou, so Alaska meat producers can sell reindeer products to the public.

You can get Elk, which is not native to Alaska but we do have Elk ranchers up here. You can also by Musk Ox burgers but I have not looked into where they came from.
And of course buffalo which is another local item but not very unique.

My understanding is it is a franchise thing. We dont have X so we cant have Y. Only what I hear...

I have had both on out-of-state visits and would not give them the time of day if they came up here. Give me Kincaid or JD's any night.
