I've read as many of the old posts here that I can find about moving to Anchorage but I still have some questions and hope that some of you nice folks that live there can answer them...

About me: I'm a young professional moving to Anchorage for a job this fall from the lower 48. I will be working a lot but also like to go to the bars/restaurants downtown quite a bit where I currently like.

-My work is in the center of downtown (or at least I think it is as it is within a few blocks of the convention center and the performing arts center). What should I expect to pay for a 1-2 bedroom apartment in this area?

-I also know of a friend who might have an apartment available for sublet around around P & 14th, is this a good neighborhood? What should I expect to pay if I decide to rent in this area? Will the traffic be bad driving to work during rush hour...?

-Are there any areas that you recommend to me? Please use street names not neighborhoods if you do so I can Google map them...

-Finally, any advise you have is more than welcome about housing or moving or anything!

Thanks!

I found this apartment on Craigslist, it is about as close as I could get to P and 14th for comparison.

2 Bedrooms with an office

You are arriving at a good time to look around. Use the Marriott Residence Inn or Extended Stay and i bet within a week or two you will have found a place that suits your profile.

The area around Westchester is really nice, close to parks, trails, and right in between the main social and commercial centers of downtown and midtown. If you're going to be in Alaska but looking for a hip urban residential atmosphere, that's about the only place you're going to find it. I would guess it's quite expensive though.

My friend has a one bedroom overlooking the inlet as far west as you can go on 5th Ave (across L St) across the street from Elderberry Park & pays $1000/month.

P & 14th area is a nice neighborhood right near Westchester Lagoon & the coastal trail- great for ice skating, groomed ski trails & bike or walking trails right nearby. It's close to New Sagaya City Market a great eclectic market, bakery, coffee shop.

No traffic problems to speak of since you are literally blocks from downtown. It's a wonderful location for downtown nightlife. My nephew stayed with friends a couple of blocks east of there & they all loved walking downtown to go out partying & not having to drive home. The area just south of Delaney Park (Park Strip) between E & L & 15th in that quadrant is a nice area where some young friends rented- they loved that area. They considered it a urban hip area. They walked to bar hop. You could walk to work!

Hope this gives you more ideas!

Does that side of downtown have some vagrancy issues? I knew some people that stayed in a corporate apartment on Cordova, it was vastly overpriced, but their employer paid for it.
