I'm starting to plan for my second trip to Alaska from Tennessee. I drove up last summer, worked in Nome and stayed in Anchorage for a while before leaving for home, but only made it to the Yukon because my car caught on fire! But anyway, I stayed in hotels and hostels mostly in anchorage, but this time I'm looking to stay there for about a month or two and can't afford the same lodging. So, I'm looking for any place relatively near Anchorage (within 10 miles or so or anywhere on a public transportation route) that would have free or cheap tent camping available. I've always heard that state parks have free camping anywhere within a certain distance away from the pay campsites, but I can't really find any info on that on their website. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

3rd Avenue in Anchorage. just before the old native hospital - take a right as you come up the hill - That is the spot you want !!

It has everything you need including washers & dryers and showers.

Price is like 5 bux a night or thereabouts.

So are you saying you want to move to Anchorage in the summer just to be homeless? I guess that's better then coming in the winter. Good luck!!!

No, the reason for the temporary move isn't to become homeless, but to see more of Alaska but by doing it cheaply because that's the only option I have. Luckily, I enjoy sleeping in a tent!

Thanks for the tip, Sitydata! Do you know the name of this place? That place sounds pretty ideal.

Can you get on the military base? They have a nice camping area for cheap.

Carlsdrivein: I am sorry I do not know the name of the place, it has a sign @ the intersection (symbol-for camping).

Lets see how I can describe easily how to get to this place.

If your on 4th ave. head toward mountain view and get on third ave going the opposite direction. You will drive up a big hill (very big). near the top of that hill is an intersection, the old native hospital will be on the right side (huge empty lot with chain link fence.).Just before that is an auction site for vehicles and other assorted junk stuff.

Take that right and you will go down an incline into the camp site area.

Sorry I can't be more specific (as in street names). I am sure I can use google and find a map to post in here for you.

Ingra street - warehouse ave !! I will post the map photo soon

(i'll be back). - soon

Don't camp there. Google Brother Francis Shelter.
