Hi there!
my husband and I were thinking to going back to AK next year, possibly in March. we have been to AK before for our honeymoon last June; we went on a cruise and we went to Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan.. we loved it! we are now thinking to come up for the winter season and to visit Anchorage for about a week. we want to come up for the idatarod 2012 and i'd like to see the northern lights and maybe go to a mush camp or something. what else we can do? what about the weather? we live in Boston so we are no stranger to the cold weather and i noticed that the temperature in march in Anchorage is pretty similar to our January in Boston... or is it colder? also, is my winter wardrobe ok for anchorage in march or should i get something heavier? my winter coats are pretty warm and my regular winter boots are ok too, but stylish; should i get something more casual? can i wear jeans, or should i put layers underneath? sorry for the silly questions, and thanks in advance for your responses!

Anchorage is slightly colder in March than a January in Boston.

Anchorage: 33 / 16
Boston: 36 / 22

When I came up to "see winter" in March two years ago, we drove out of Homer in a whiteout, nearly got stuck on an unplowed road with 2+ feet of snow on it, got stranded on the Kenai Peninsula due to an avalanche, and saw -20 temps for two nights in a row. It was a blast! It could be a lot milder than that though, and if you're really planning on staying in Anchorage for your whole visit you'll always have some warmth to duck into and shouldn't have problems getting around.

I'd suggest getting out of town, though. At least go see Talkeetna and drive up to Hatcher Pass and eat at the lodge up there. Or go down to the Kenai and see that area without all the summer tourists mucking it up. At the very least go down to Girdwood and see Turnagain Arm on a clear day. What you should wear depends on what you're going to be doing. Around town jeans, maybe with thermals underneath, should be fine.

If you plan on standing outside and watching any of the iditarod festivities, it can get cold. This last year, it was windy on a few days. I tend to wear my snow boots, snow pants and a heavy coat to stay warm.
