I am considering a move back to Alaska very soon. I have a free place to live for a month or so and I'll have some money for food and everything else I'll need to get me through a couple of months. I know that most of the population of Anchorage seems to leave after summer is over, but I'm assuming the jobs leave with them. Is it less likely to find a job in the fall and winter? Or will more jobs open up because so many people leave? Any idea of somewhere someone should look for a job when arriving at that time?

If people are in fact leaving Anchorage in the fall and winter then they must just be seasonal workers. The important question is what kind of work do you do? Check Alexsys and the Anchorage Daily News classifieds for jobs.

Most of Anchorage does NOT leave after summer is over. Maybe you're thinking of Skagway or something.

Perhaps I am mistaken on that. Maybe I'm thinking of Alaska in general?

I'm a photographer, but I end up doing odd jobs quite a bit because photography work is hard to find.

Thanks for the help.

Does anyone know what the substitute teacher situation is like for Anchorage? Is there a glut of them, or a shortage right now?

I worked as a substitute here in central California, but there was a huge teacher layoff in the local school systems which led to a massive number of unemployed teachers working as subs (and because they had contacts in the system they would invariably suck up most of the sub assignments). As a result, if you weren't a laid off teacher, there really wasn't enough work to make substituting a viable job.

Now that my wife has accepted a job in Anchorage, I'd like to give substitute teaching there a shot, but I just want to make sure there will be enough sub opportunities to make it worthwhile.
