So... my husband and I are considering purchasing a camper trailer before we move to the Anchorage area next month from Oklahoma. We have some experience camping but we were curious about doing it in AK. Are there lots of places to camp (with hookups...I don't really want to rough it) within a few hours drive of Anchorage?

Plenty of places with hookups, just not in winter. You need to do tons more research. Okies tend to be fair weathered people and complain a lot about the weather. It may not be the place for you unless you're going to rent a traditional apartment or house. My suggestion is that you move to Muskogee or Ada. You'd be much happier in one of those places if you're going to live in a camper.

Sorry, I wasn't very clear. We are not planning to live in one, we just want to camp in it during the summer. We were thinking several weekends and maybe a few weeks here and there. We are planning to live in a traditional house full time. We understand about the weather there and we know it i not the thing to live in full time.

There are lots of places and things to see within about a two hour drive of Anchorage. You will get alot of use out of your camper, and you would be better served by buying your rv there in the lower 48. I bought my camper in AK and had to pay a 3000 dollar shipping fee.

I agree, there are a lot of areas where your RV can have hookups. Lots of people drive them up here and spend the summer traveling on the road system and stay in the RV lots several nights.

We are talking about buying an older motorhome to get up there and selling it. Is that a good option or do people not want anything that is not newer? I just have no idea how easy it will be to sell it.

There are lots of older motohomes up here sale. Some with woodstoves. Probably not the best idea if you need to sell it quick.

I wonder if they have any RV places open in the winter. It would be awesome to stay in one in Fairbanks and see what winter is really like.

Not an Alaskan... But as someone who lives in a 28 foot airstream....

Living in a travel trailer/RV anywhere that gets below/when it's below about 30 gets.... Complicated.

I'd not recomend it unless you can/are willing to "dry camp" and use the campground bathroom/shower facilities. Including in the middle of the night!!!!

Also, unless your looking at a dedicated 4 season trailer like an artic fox.... Well, my airstream has an R value of about 5.... It gets expensive heating it in winter unless your willing to live like most are not willing to.

You can, and I have, but it's not something most are willing to do.
