Anyone who says there are no hiking trails with real trees around Anchorage has not gotten out & about.

Anchorage School District has around 90 home languages spoken among their students, one of the most diverse populations anywhere, every shade of color imaginable.

I do agree, however, that Anchorage is most certainly architecturely challenged. Unfortunately, 9.2 earthquakes tend to do that.
That is a very nice hike, by the way.

I think part of the problem is that some people are expecting forests in Alaska to be like the lower-48. Unfortunately, the boreal forests of Alaska are four times less dense than the temperate forests of the lower-48.

I like to think of Anchorage's architecture as being eclectic. With pockets of older structures from the 1950s and 1960s, combined with newer structures, and a scattering of really old structures (pre-1950). Compared to most lower-48 cities of a quarter million, Anchorage is still pretty young.

And you are right about earthquakes, they do have a tendency to shake things up.

So grading on a scale, for me Anchorage falls squarely in the middle. It's what's outside of Anchorage that makes it all worth it IMO.

In other words, i didn't move here to live in Anchorage, I came here to live in Alaska.
Rated you positive for that one and am also going to stop reading this post... so many people rate Alaska based on Anchorage... As gigantic as AK is, they form an opinion based on that... The OP misses the "social" events in Seattle, your husband doesn't.

That should tell you just how much of Alaska they really saw. If they are judging Alaska based upon Anchorage, then it is most likely because they never left Anchorage.

Yup Alaska is so different everywhere, is ridiculous to base it on Anchorage. The problem though is it is so expensive to explore there. Once I went from Dutch Harbor to Anchorage to Ketchikan, oh lordy the price of that I will never forget. I am envious of ones that travel all over by RV.
In my experience I spent majority of my 12 plus years in Dutch Harbor and also spent some time in Anchorage. As much as I whined and complained about Dutch and was more than anxious to go to Anchorage, living there was always not a option. I like it to visit and pass through but it just never grew on me. Also the pay is so much less there and still everything costs a lot. If one is there and can't stand it that can be very depressing. I once spent Nov, Dec and part Jan there and it was very depressing.
