The figures never lie, but liars always figure...

Crimes per Capita is at least a way towards leveling the reporting. If the crime rates are reported per capita based on UCR (Uniform Crime Reporting), then you are comparing apples to apples. An aggravated (felony) assault is an aggravated assault - UCR goes by the highest crime reported, which is a shortcoming of UCR. So someone puts a gun to a clerks head and robs a convenience store, then runs outside pistol whips a bystander, and then steals a car in the parking lot, it all counts as a robber. Not a robbery, auto theft, and an aggravated battery/assault. The same as if someone snatches a gold chain off their boy/girlfriends neck for the intent of stealing it. Both are counted as 1 Robbery, while I think I would be more concerned about the Armed Robbery, Auto Theft, and Aggravated assault - than the Domestic Dispute that turned into a Robbery. One shows a propensity to be involved in random street violence than the other.

A newer crime reporting standard, NIBRS (National Incident Based Reporting System), is better as it counts everything that was reported, not just the highest offense and this is only ONE enhancement over UCR. THe bad news is that 95% of the US isn't NIBRS compliant, yet.

In case you are really interested.

I never argued the "where" I argued the "how"... If you knew the figures they were reporting eliminated almost two thirds of the numbers they were using, wouldn't be curious what numbers they were using?

You know, most of this crap spreads because it is idealized on TV so much and all most kids/young adults do nowadays (god, did I just say that) is watch - gangland, MTV cribs and crap shows that make the punk, the ghetto-got-a-break and made it big in rap. The crook who shot somebody and wrote a book made into a movie and is now some kind of urban hero.

Kids hanging out together don't come up with shooting someone because they were "disrespected" on their own... they learn it from TV/Movies...

How do you think "sagging" became such a huge fad? Because some kid forgot his belt and wears his pants 10 sizes too big and everyone thought it was "cool"? NO - because they made it a fad on TV and now all the kid's thinks it's "cool"... They have pants with the boxers sewn in so the pants don't fall down... Someday, hopefully, they realize just how stupid they look...

Yes. I can agree with that.... I was just showing a way on how the numbers can be hidden or at the very least misleading.

Anchorage did hit the top ten of the most dangerous cities in recent years - at least by Forbes numbers.

Shoot - I wear my pants low because I lost a higher paying job and have to make do with less - which means that I can't drink much beer - which = losing 40 pounds in the last 5 months - and not being able to afford buying smaller jeans with my current income.

Not all "baggy" wearers are bangers - some just can't afford better.

Sometimes I wear a belt that I bought in 1997 in downtown San Francisco. It is the only belt that I own. Sometimes I wear it around town to keep my jeans from sagging - but usually I wear it with my only pair of slacks and a nice dress shirt - when I am trying to get employed in a higher paying job.

Vote Mitt Romney for president - end the Obama recession.

Stop blaming politics for crime and sagging - the two have nothing to do with each other. Blaming crime on politics is nothing more than a cop-out for taking responsibility for your own actions.

I grew up in a 2 room house (no not a two bedroom, a two room) and had an out-house and no running water inside. Yet I managed to get my HS diploma, spend 8+ years in the military and get my associates degree in computer science - we didn't own a computer at home, had no computers at school and didn't have my first computer until I was 26yo.

Don't blame politics, the economy or the guy down the street until you can take some responsibility for your own actions.

Blaming XXX is a cop out and you will never fix your own issues.

I have personally rescued a loved one (woman) from a known crack house/heroin house numerous times at 1303 W. 23rd. #1 in Spenard. Otherwise, I would never go near the district...people seem to exist only at night there...the more the police patrol there, the further underground the junkies entrench themselves.
