What camping state parks do most Anchorage residence go to during the summer time months? What do they offer to campers in Tents & Recreational Campers? I have been to Denali National Park.

Generaly speaking, those located on the Kenai Penninsula, particularly the ones near/on the Kenai and Russian rivers. Otherwise, your question is as big as Alaska. Alaska State Parks

We, & a lot of other Anchorage residents, would go down to Russian River campground for the first & second red salmon runs. Had to reserve 6 months ahead of time to get choice campsites!

Williwaw campground is also popular next to Portage glacier. The Seward city waterfront campground is another favorite.

So many campgrounds!

There are a couple of STATE camp grounds close to Anchorage. There is Eagle River, Eklutna, Finger Lake, King Mountain, and Nancy Lake to the north. Of those, Eklutna and Nancy Lake probably offer the most in terms of activities and amenities. To the south, there is Bird Creek, Cordova, Clam Gulch, and Deep Creek. Most of the campgrounds going south are either privately owned or are run by the Feds. I may have missed a coue. Our favorites of the southern campgrounds is Deep Creek, as it is right on the inlet. Hope this helps.

The USFS campgrounds between Portage turnoff & Seward are all great.

There are also a myriad of USFS cabins in the area from Crow Pass, Resurrection Pass to Russian Lakes & Dale Clemens, we have loved all of them. Must backpack in of course.

I do not camp in State parks, or national parks either for that matter. The camp sites they assign are not big enough to camp safely, in my opinion. I camp either on private property, with the owner's permission of course, or on public lands.

Want to experience the wildlife, particularly black and brown bears, while you camp and fish? I recommend Skilak Lake at the mouth of the Kenai River! What a wild camping excursion that was! Saw more bears than trout!
