WOW! Just checked out the elementary school options in ASD they are amazing! Looks like we may be moving there late summer. My oldest won't start kindergarten until 2014, but I am blown away by the amount of options. Where we are at now, we are planning on homeschooling, (simply because our schools are awful). From the research I've done it's looking like Eagle River is our best match. (Will know more when we spend more time there). It's my understanding that we would still be eligible for the schools within the anchorage boundaries? Are the schools as great as they appear to be? Any advice much appreciated thanks!

Eagle River is in the Municipality of Anchorage and is part of the Anchorage School District. I hear good things about the schools in Eagle River.

The person that wrote that was not high. I take it you don't approve of the ASD?

No, the ASD in general is not a good school district at all. I think some of the Charter Schools do a pretty good job but the quality of education the majority of the children are getting is very poor.

We have lived many places and ASD has been our favorite thus far. It depends what you have to compare it to, I guess.

The ASD can be good if you get in a charter or alternative school and your kids do not have any learning challenges. If they do ASD can be a nightmare.

Our boys go to a home school co-op that is through Frontier Charter School, (which is an ASD charter school).

We are very happy with it.

I think ASD schools are better than a lot of places. I also think the schools in the Mat-Su are excellent, particularly in the Colony schools area (Colony HS, Colony MS, Pioneer Peak Elementary)

Expensive schools, the ASD spends money like drunken sailors. ASD is like 50% of the citys budget which is paid for almost 100% by property taxes which is partially why rent is so high.

That's funny. Alaskans always cry about taxes but yet the pay some of the lowest in the country. Try living in the lower 48 for a while and tell me about taxes.

As for the schools: the schools here are good. Like anything else parental involvement is key and that goes anywhere. Many Alaskans blame the schools for their kids not learning but then get up at 5am to take them to hockey practice...
