Hi I am a girl from Holland, Europe, I am a writer and I am currently writing a story about Alaska. Unfortunately, I don't have the opportunity to go there rigth now. In order to write as realistic as possible, I need some detailed information about Alaska from someone who is really familiair with it. My questions are:

infrastructure
1. I've found out on the Internet that some towns can only be reached by airoplanes. Is that true?
2. What do you do if you want to leave a town like that? Borrow your neigbours private plane :-) If there's a aeroplane nearby, how would you get there?
3. Do people own cars in that area and are there dirt roads around in, for instance, the woods?
4. Are special parking lots/aeroplanes for private planes in Anchourage?
5. What would you do to travel to Anchourage if you live in a very small village, let's say, at the west coast?
6. Would you have access to the Internet and TV phone and/or mail if you live on the West Coast? And if you have a satellite?

Food
7. What would the food be like in a very small and off-the-beaten-track village in Alaska? Is there any import?
8. Is there fresh food from Canada/the States/farmers around available?
9. Does a lot of the food being eaten come from cans?
10. Is it likely that there are fishermen and hunters around to provide in food? Is it likely that one will hunt of fish for food themselves?
11. What else is common to eat and drink there (I am from Europe and not the States so if you tell me there's food import from the states, please specify!)
12. What would the food be like in Ancourage, what is available and what is not?
13. what are common drinks?
14. can you drink water from the tap?
15. Is it likely to have tap water if you live in a small village near the West Coast?
16. if you go to the west coast, are there petrol stations or grocery stores or shopping malls or bars and how do you reach them?
other
17. What do you use for heating and is it common to live in wooden houses, or what else?
18What do you wear in very cold winters? What kind of boots/coats/trousers etc?
19. do you have local policemen, Sherrifs of something in a country area, in what kind of house (for duty? do they live? what do their vehicles look like and there uniforms?
i know, many questions, but if you can at least answer some of them: Thank you a lot for your help!!!

This is true. There are very few roads in Alaska.

2. What do you do if you want to leave a town like that? Borrow your neigbours private plane :-) If there's a aeroplane nearby, how would you get there?
The larger towns such as Barrow, Nome and Bethel have scheduled airline jet service. The smaller villages rely on air taxies using single and twin engine planes to fly you to a hub such as Barrow

3. Do people own cars in that area and are there dirt roads around in, for instance, the woods?
Some places such as Nome have quite a few miles of roads and cars are common. Some of the smaller villages may or may not have any cars. In the winter time when the rivers are frozen over people often drive on the ice to get from village to village.

4. Are special parking lots/aeroplanes for private planes in Anchourage?
Both public airports in Anchorage have large areas for parking private planes. There are also a few small private owned airports

5. What would you do to travel to Anchourage if you live in a very small village, let's say, at the west coast?
Most likely you would take a small air taxi to a larger village that has scheduled airline service to Anchorage.

6. Would you have access to the Internet and TV phone and/or mail if you live on the West Coast? And if you have a satellite?
Many of the villages have internet and phone service. While there are some people with satellite dishes, they are not real common as Alaska is so far North it is hard to track the satellites

Food
7. What would the food be like in a very small and off-the-beaten-track village in Alaska? Is there any import?
Most villages in Alaska rely on at least a semi subsistance style of living. They rely on fish, wild game, and berries that grow in the area. They also rely on canned goods shipped in from larger towns.

8. Is there fresh food from Canada/the States/farmers around available?
The larger towns such as Bethel do carry fresh food in their stores. However it is very expensive.

9. Does a lot of the food being eaten come from cans?
This is true. People often stockpile 3 to 6 months worth of food.

10. Is it likely that there are fishermen and hunters around to provide in food? Is it likely that one will hunt of fish for food themselves?
Fishermen and hunters play a very important role in the villages. While most families have someone that does the hunting, it is also common for fish and wild game to be shared with people who are not able to fish and hunt.

11. What else is common to eat and drink there (I am from Europe and not the States so if you tell me there's food import from the states, please specify!)
Things like coffee and tea which have a long shelf life are common. In the larger places a lot of soda pop is consumed. You can often find canned or frozen fruit juice. Alaska has a real problem with alcohol. In many places it is banned.

12. What would the food be like in Ancourage, what is available and what is not?
Anchorage is a town of about 300,000 people. Pretty much anything you would find in any large U.S. city you will find in Anchorage

13. what are common drinks?
Coffee, tea, soda pop, beer, wine, hard liquor, fruit juice, energy drinks and just about anything else you can think of

14. can you drink water from the tap?
You can in the larger cities. Not sure of the water quality in most villages.

15. Is it likely to have tap water if you live in a small village near the West Coast?
Not sure how things are now. It use to be most villages did not have running water.

16. if you go to the west coast, are there petrol stations or grocery stores or shopping malls or bars and how do you reach them?
Most villages are quite small in size. Most only have a general store. Most do not have shopping malls. Getting around is usually by foot or with an all terrain vehicle. In the winter time people get around by snow machine.

In westen Alaska heating oil is used. It is quite expensive.

18What do you wear in very cold winters? What kind of boots/coats/trousers etc?
There is a wide range of what one might wear. Down filled parkas, insulated coveralls, long johns, footwear made from animal hides, insulated boots, are just some of what you might see

19. do you have local policemen, Sherrifs of something in a country area, in what kind of house (for duty? do they live? what do their vehicles look like and there uniforms?
The larger villages might have a small police department. Many smaller villages have a village public safety officer who does whatever is needed until an Alaskan state trooper can fly out. They might have a vehicle of some sort or another. They usually have access to atv's, boats and snow machines.

i know, many questions, but if you can at least answer some of them: Thank you a lot for your help!!!
I hope this helps.

Here's some info on the Village Public Safety Officer program:
Village Public Safety Officer Program Home

Also, Alaska is a big state. Life in Ketchikan is very different than life in Anchorage which is very different than life in Barrow which is very different than life in Tuluksak.

4.No parking lots, but they can use lakes, there is a big one near the anchorage airport, and a few bigger lakes around town.

6.It depends on where you are, GCI which is a local cable, phone, internet company is starting to expand into the villages but not all. ACS I think has service in some areas too and so does AT&T. But it all really depends on where you are it. Some areas in Alaska there are no cell phone signals.

7. usually it's just what they can get from the land. but they do have imports too but they are very expensive.

8. anchorage yes and some other areas not sure about the villages.

12. Anchorage has alot of different cuisines, Trying to think of something we don't have is hard, The two that come to my mind is British/Irish food and South american food. If you check Anchorage Restaurants | Urbanspoon

you can see all of the restaurants in anchorage and 3 or 4 other cities too.

13. water, pepsi, coke, sodas, alcoholic drinks pretty much anything you guys have.

14. Yes some of the best in the world, depending on where you are it's from a glacier.

15. depends on where you live, some areas they have a big water tank where you pay per gallon I think but it's fresh, you just have to go and get it and haul it back to your house in some kind of container.

16. It depends on where you go, Some areas are dry meaning no alcohol is allowed there.

17. We use a boiler which pumps hot water through the house using pipes but I am in Anchorage and it depends on where you live, some areas use wood stoves, or they have electric heaters.

18. since I am in Anchorage I just usually use a light coat, for very cold days I have a heavier jacket, If you are in fairbanks or colder places, you have to layer clothes on top of each other depending on how long you are going to be outside.

19. Every village or city has police officers, I can't remember what they are called in the villages, but once again since I am in Anchorage here are what the cars look like and also the uniforms

and life is pretty different depending on where you go, Anchorage is the biggest city and closest to how other cities are in the lower 48, we pretty much have everything they have.

AnneBos: It's easy getting seasonal summer work jobs in Alaska at resort hotels. You can go to Cool Works and open up free account. Under Community Resources and My Coolworks. They start to hire in December for the whole summer. I have done this and worked in Alaska four times. I was from state of Florida.
