I'm a photographer and I'm spending December 27th in Anchorage. I'll have a car and camera gear and six hours of daylight to shoot the town and nearby nature stuff. i'm primarily interested in landscapes and seascapes.

I'm landing at 1am and leaving at 7pm so I don't have time for proper exploration. I need to cram as much as possible into that short time.

When I land I'm picking up the car and looking for the northern lights if the sky's clear. where should I go for that? how should i expect the roads to be in those places? well maintained or 4x4 only? i'm no stranger to driving in snow but i want to know what to expect so I can be ready.

maybe i'll sleep.

then there's sunrise. what are some good spots for that? i'm okay with Anchorage in the background or mountains or water or all three. I've seen some cool photos but they all appear to be in summer so I don't know about accessibility.

then general daytime stuff. i can't go TOO far from town because of my schedule, but I'd rather go a little further to get one good shot than stay close and two or three mediocre ones. I guess I' m looking for scenic lookouts and stuff like that. recommendations?

then sunset. recommendations?

then dropping off the car and heading back to the airport.

should be a ridiculous day to say the least!

thanks in advance

If it was me, I'd drive to right here for the Northern Lights: http://goo.gl/maps/LdT61
Unless they've got the road closed. I know for a while they were shutting it down after 11pm for security reasons, but its worth a shot.
Glen Alps is also good, but the road may not be in great shape.
For the rest of your shots, down the Turnagain Arm would work. Here's some pictures I took there this last January: AKStafford: Turnagain Arm in Winter
