My husband and I are hoping to move to Anchorage for him to start his medical residency next June (2010). Everything that I've found sounds awesome and we're both really excited about the possibility of moving (from Wisconsin). What are the downsides to living in Anchorage? It's easy to find the pros, but we're having a hard time finding the cons.

If you scroll through the numerous threads you will find the cons. Some of those mentioned are: The length of the darkness in winter; ice/snow; cold temps, etc. Coming from Wisconsin the cold shouldn't really bother you too bad.

I have scrolled through the threads quite a bit. Maybe coming from WI the cons just don't really seem that bad to me! One concern is that I will have to walk the dogs in the dark in the winter without my husband. It makes me nervous for safety reasons. Any comments on that?

Alot of it will depend upon where you walk your dogs in the dark. You have to remember there are plenty of moose in Anchorage. What part of Anchorage are you thinking of moving into?

Who cares about 8 cents, our money will all go to the government anyway. We have become a socialist nation. They know how to spend our money better than we do. Sorry OP, I had to rant, back on topic.

Why would you have to walk the dogs in the dark? Will you be working during the day?

Because the way I see it, the "less" we pay it's more money in our pocket. Makes a big difference for those who commute.

I think what he's trying to say is that those pesky commies will squeeze it out of us one way or another.
