My wife and I (both teachers) are moving to Anchorage this spring. Ideally we are looking for house with a yard for our dog. Should we have something lined up before get there or is it fairly easy to get something in a week or so of arriving?

Leave the dog behind and you'll have an easier time finding housing. While some apartments will take pets I wasn't too impressed with what they had to offer. Start looking in the on-line edition of the Anchorage Daily News and Craigslist to get some things lined up...

I was their last year looking at Apartments and I believe Wildwood estates and the apartments next to them both took dogs, and they weren't too bad. The ones next too them are brand new. Both are owned by the same company, and took 2 animals of which on onf mine weighs 60 pounds. I know its not a house but it could work until you could find one just in case.

Get your housing in advance if you can. Try Craigslist, put an add there telling them what you need. Don't put what you can pay just what you want. Try to have someone go by and look at any place you are renting. Oh and don't leave your dog behind, you would truly regret it. Check out the local off leash dog parks while you are here!

I agree about Craigslist, but beware of the Nigerian scammers. If they don't give you a 907 area code phone number to call, don't respond to the ad. The Nigerian scammers are pretty easy to spot when they e-mail you (poor English, weird story, wants 3 months in advance sent to an off-shore account), but their adds are alluring.
