Wow...someone doesn't care for Anchorage? Well, that's a first! Who wouldn't love 4 hours of daylight in January? Or summers where it rarely gets above 70 degrees? And the cost of living? It is so low that your permanent fund dividend actually makes you richer in the end! And if you need to travel, those frequent flyer miles will pay off in the future!

Seriously, this of course is just parody on my part. I lived there for two years in the 90's, and didn't care for it either. My point is unlike almost any other State in the country, you either love it or hate it. So threads like this are nothing new.

My theory then, and now, is that many move to Alaska for very good reasons. They want an unspoiled State with tons of wilderness and freedom. Others move there because of a job, or because it is literally the last place to go in the U.S. Those situations don't usually end up well.

I happen to love the short days of winter here. Many people in Alaska actually DO prefer the cold/darkness.

Summers here are nice precisely because they rarely go above 70 degrees

The long days are hard for me because my cloud-loving winter heart hates bright sunlight...but even so, we stay cooler here in the Summer than everyone else (Southcentral does anyway) and it's spectacularly beautiful here at all times of year.

FTR, I grew up in LA (SFV & Malibu). There's no comparison between that cesspool of a city and the beauty of Alaska. Anchorage may have wacky zoning laws (we lived there for a year before moving to The Valley (Matsu), but the city is set with a gorgeous backdrop. I find Anchorage rather beautiful, personally. Beats LA by about a million miles lol

I lived in Anchorage for 40 years, for 40 years I owned a very strong dislike for the city, I referred to it as a turd in a rose garden. In short, Anchorage as a city is crap, but the location just cannot be beat. The surrounding beauty and recreational opportunities are unparalleled.

Los Angeles for the most part is not sleek or modern LOL. Most of the buildings are stuck in the 70s and because real estate is so expensive and because of environmentalists who are anti-development, it will probably be stuck in the 70s for a long time. I'm not saying Anchorage is any better, but to say Los Angeles is modern and sleek is hilarious lol.
