A massive earthquake -- registering 7.0 magnitude according to the U.S. Geological Survey -- rocked Anchorage, Alaska Friday, sending debris crashing to the ground, damaging buildings and causing "major infrastructure damage," officials said.

Congrats on Anchorage being really prepared for this. I think the no loss of life is a credit to Alaska preparedness.

I lived in Anchorage in the mid-90's, and experienced a few jolts, mostly between 4.5 and 5.3.

I would caution Alaskans to think this is actually the big one, however. The '64 Quake, not even as close to Anchorage as this one, was 9.2 on the scale. I'm not sure of the calculations, but I think that would make that quake about 100+ times stronger. Fortunately, they don't happen very often. But just a sense of comparison.

This news has seemed to take a back seat to the news of Bush's passing. Glad no one was injured or killed though.

Actually, a magnitude 9.0 is 33x33, or approximately 1,000 times stronger than a 7.0 on the Richter scale.

Here's a good little spiel on EQ magnitudes. There's a quick video in here with some graphics and stuff

It really is a testament to how well prepared they were. It could have been much worse.

It has been extremely annoying. I guess if anyone HAD been injured or killed the news stations would have drooled all over it. Because the state doesn't tend to panic and happens to be prepared, you can't hear a thing. I haven't been able to get much if any national or world news since Friday all because of the passing of this political relic. News agencies always forget that there is an entire planet still spinning despite their opinion about what is newsworthy. Not that I have anything specific against the man but do we really need a repeating roll out of every single candid and posed photo of him and various political has-beens for two days? Little rambling anecdotes from everyone who ever spoke a word to him?

The lack of life destruction is why it hasn't stayed in national news that much, which is a good thing.
