Hello, I currently live in Indiana. I was wondering how much the average cost of living was in alaska. Like in Indiana a person can live on their on for ten dollars an hour really. I wanted to move to anchorage but i want to know how much i'd need to make an hour to move there. Any help would be appreciated.

You can't live on your own here for 10 dollars an hour. That's actually a pretty low wage up here. Most things pay more here, as an example, I worked a couple retail jobs - one in 2002-2003 at a Pier 1 that was about $8.50 an hour. In 2003-2004 I worked a bit at Home Depot, that was $10. I recently looked into Wal Mart for a second job, and that was a tad over 10 bucks an hour for a cashier job. Depends on what job you have, what money you can make at it. Most admin type jobs (secretary/receptionist and the like) would be in the teens per hour, right around $14-15 per hour for a lot of them. I guess you could live for $10 an hour but you'd need roommates in a cheaper apartment.

I found a COL calculator some where on the net. It had prices of food, cable, heat, etc.. in your city and that to the city you were looking to move. Also compared what you make in your state and what it would translate into where your moving. I dont know how close this really is but hope it can help

Tried it. It's not. Sorry.

We lived in Greenwood for a short time back in 2000. It was WAY cheaper there than here... Really pretty, too.

Just curious...what makes you want to move up here? Or should I re-phrase the question...what makes you want to leave there?

Those prices on the Cost-Of-Living Calculator for Anchorage that Bostonredsock5 provided look about right. Except for the gasoline prices which are way too low.

Keep in mind that just about everything in Alaska is either flown or barged to Alaska from the lower-48 and with today's fuel prices, that will certainly increase the cost of goods.
