Keep in mind Verizon doesn't provide any service in Alaska. They have a roaming agreement with one of the local carriers.

I use ACS (Alaska Communications Systems) they are a CDMA carrier. They have the best all around service in Alaska. They have 3g, 4g, etc. I have a Motorola Milestone X on their system. No problems.

I renewed my Sprint plan before I left MN, got an iPhone4 and even got a reduced roaming plan for Canada for a month (.20 vs. .59 per minute)... the phone and lal features work great. Occasionally, I have a call which will go right to VM, but have not had any of the issues other posters have mentioned. I specifically told the Sprint rep I was moving to Anchorage and wanted to make sure I would not have my contract cancelled or additional charges added after I got here... so far, so good.
