I think it would be difficult to tell someone who lives in Eagle or Cold Foot that those places aren't rural, although you can drive to them.

So, um, when it comes right down to it, most of Alaska is rural.

LOL, most of Alaska is, well..... for lack of a better, more precise terminology.... one helluva lot of territory! In driving around we became painfully aware of how much of Alaska was outside of our range of sight. Rural?.... yeah!....I think the terms fits quite well.

4. How easy or difficult is it to get around Anchorage? I'm guessing we'll be renting a car. But just wondering how close Anchorage is to hiking, parks and sight seeing.
There are a lot of places to hike within the anchorage bowl or a 30 minute drive. Here is a site with much information about hiking spots around southcentral and it shows how close they are to anchorage
All Hiking Trails in the Alaska Hike Search Data Base

for what it's worth my favs are flattop (for the crowds not the scenery), south fork eagle river / symphony lake (for the scenery) and falls creek (for the scenery and it's a difficult hike which I like)
