My husband & I lived in Anchorage all our lives until 1999. He still works on the slope so flies through Anchorage a couple times a month. I haven't been back since 2002. We are moving back and I'd like all your opinions on whether to live in Anchorage or Eagle River. We have a 2nd grade girl and a jr. high boy. My biggest concern is the school. I'm scared to death of huge, gang-filled schools. I went to West & Dimond, but I hear they've both really, really changed. Where should we go? Let's just pretend money isn't an option - lol. We'll make Eagle River work if that's the best place to be.
Bottom line - do i need to be afraid of Anchorage? 'Cause that's what I keep hearing. Thanks!

My kids came through Mears and Dimond. My youngest is still there. I haven't noticed a major problem. Certainly not gangs and such. Dimond I mean

Personnally, I love Eagle River. It has a small town feel, with all city amenites just 20 minutes away in Anchorage. Eagle River High School is just a few years old, Ravenwood Elementary is supposed to be one of the best in the district. I don't have to deal with the traffic problems of Anchorage when just running some simple errands like supermarket, bank, etc. and yet the commute to downtown is no longer than that from South Anchorage.
There are no really bad (unsafe) areas of Eagle River, although there are some unattractive ones. However, in Anchorage there are definately some unsafe neighborhoods. The nicest areas to live in Anchorage generally are at the southernmost end. So, since the commute is the same, why not live in Eagle River, where you can get a bigger, nicer lot, gorgeous views and a small town feel?

20 minutes? You must be stuck in the slow lane...

I think the gang problems in Anchorage are overrated. There is certainly a criminal element here, but it seems to be primarily restricted to kids who are involved in these types of activities. As you probably know, there are some areas of town that have bad reputations (i.e. Mt View, Fairview, and Spenard), but even those receive unfair criticism at times. I would have to say that overall, I find Anchorage to be a VERY safe city, both for kids and adults. I have lived here since 1989 and put two kids all the way through the Anchorage School District. I don't think it is any more dangerous here than anywhere else (including Chugiak/Eagle River). The real issue with gang activity is drugs, and they are everywhere.

The one downside to Eagle River is that the traffic into town can be pretty bad if there is bad weather and/or an accident. There is just one road into town and you're competing with all the other Eagle River residents, as well as the folks from the valley. I think Eagle River and South Anchorage are very similar. Just for accessibility reasons, I would prefer South Anchorage.

Have to disagree with better accessibility to South Anchorage. There is also only one route, and must compete with all the traffic going down to the Kenai, worse in summer, of course. I think year round the commute pretty much evens out for either South Anch or Eagle River to downtown or Elmendorf. To Fort Richardson, I'd say Eagle River or even Peter's Creek is a quicker commute. But for winter commute, best to be inside the Glenn Hwy S curve if living north/east. I'm not sure of a similar logical cut off point for points south. Maybe O'Malley?
Commuting to Midtown I'd probably give the edge to South Anchorage but not by much. I do agree that Eagle River and South Anchorage are very similar in many ways.

Eagle River is pretty nice now and the commute isn't bad either. If you choose Anchorage, check the area around Service High School.

I may be coming to work in Anc. regional medical and was wondering where a good/safe place would be to live. Apartment would be ok, but would rather rent a small place outof town if possible, but have to be within 30 min. of hopistal. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Or maybe look at Kenai, Soldotna, Sterling...The airport in Kenai has almost hourly jumper flights to and from Anchorage, with an easily accessible airport, unless you want the bigger city life...

Check out Eagle River and Chugiak for the apartment. Smaller bedroom communities just north of Anchorage.
